The Claims - Reinsurance IT team is seeking a highly motivated, results-driven, experienced Data Engineer to devise and execute Data & ETL solutions in support of Strategic Ceded Reinsurance Platform – ReCess/ProCede. Our team is adopting Scaled Agile development Framework (SAFe) and core DevSecOps engineering practices such as continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD). This position is full-time and based in our Hartford office.

A Data Engineer who will design and develop the technical solutions used in Reinsurance.  This resource must demonstrate strong technical & collaboration skills through the software development lifecycle including development and validation of estimates, quality, and accuracy of technical designs, and build and implementation. As a dynamic and talented Data Engineer you will have proven experience leading technical discussions, evaluating options, and implementing solutions to meet business needs, and performing as a technical resource within a team.  You will understand the capabilities and limitations of the various technologies available and will be able to tailor solutions using a mix of tools in Data Centric & Batch intensive processing to achieve business outcomes.  

Responsibilities:

  • Design & develop technical solutions for various initiatives through the software development life cycle, including validating the completeness of estimates, quality, and accuracy of technical designs, build and implementation.
  • Proactively address technical issues and risks that could impact schedule and/or budget.
  • Provide oversight to ensure the proper application of design patterns, frameworks and services to improve consistency and reduce complexity.
  • Assure that technical documentation and technical artifacts are accurately prepared and maintained.
  • Identify and address key constraints and requirements such as interfaces to downstream/ Upstream systems or packaged software.
  • Work closely with the architecture team to ensure that the technical solution designs and implementation are consistent with the architectural vision. 
  • Recommend, set and enforce development guidelines and best practices.
  • Ensure the development of reusable software modules. 
  • Participate in architecture and software engineering technical forums and discussions.
  • Review and update designs in response to problems uncovered during testing.
  • Active participation in the planning, coordination, and execution of performance testing efforts.
  • Provide timely and technically appropriate written communication to stakeholders (SM, Product Owner, Agile team, etc.). 
  • Inform the TL/SM of design changes or other technical issues that may impact the project. 
  • Provide alternative solutions to assist in problem resolution. 
  • Maintain open communication with other team members.
  • Strive to raise the performance and effectiveness of the agile/project team.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in design and development of data centric, batch intensive business processing solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics. or another related field
  • In-depth knowledge of ETL and data management strategies, tools, principles, and practices
  • Expertise in database & ETL technologies using Oracle, MS SQL Server, SQL, PL/SQL, Informatica and Talend
  • Experience in MSBI/BO reporting.
  • Strong programming skills in Windows, Unix shell scripting
  • Experience in Autosys job scheduling
  • Experience in B2B XML messaging, Java & .Net
  • Knowledge of DevOps concepts; experience with DevOps tools such as Jenkins, GitHub, Sonar, Nexus, Maven, Ansible, Chef or equivalent a plus
  • Knowledge of ProCede - Ceded Reinsurance Admin system is a plus.
  • Experience in Conversion and Migration initiatives is a plus.
  • Good knowledge Property & Casualty Insurance/Reinsurance business.
  • Self-motivated, strong sense of ownership/accountability, and results oriented with the ability to manage time and schedules effectively
  • Natural curiosity with a strong desire to learn, maintain, and apply knowledge of emerging data technologies
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills with ability to effectively communicate with senior management.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$90,320 - $135,480
