Reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer and Deputy General Counsel, the Director, Office of Sustainability (the Director), will assume a critical role in the Office of Sustainability as it seeks to support the execution of The Hartford’s strategic sustainability agenda. The Director will partner with business line and functional leaders to integrate sustainability principles into the company’s operations and support the development of solutions and strategies that create sustainable value in the context of a complex and dynamic environment. This role can be based remotely within the https://U.S., ideally in the Eastern or Central time zones.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist in the ongoing development and implementation of business line and functional strategic initiatives to further The Harford’s strategic sustainability agenda, including:

    • partnering with and supporting business line leaders on ESG product solutions, innovation and commercial opportunities to drive value

    • assisting in establishing strategic ESG goals, programs, and initiatives across the enterprise

    • monitoring industry, policy and market trends and bringing externally driven insights and expertise on ESG topics (https://e.g., energy transition, climate change, social trends, and emerging issues) to inform The Hartford’s sustainability strategies

  • Maintain domain expertise and knowledge of key peer and industry developments on ESG issues, further embedding research into strategic initiatives, commitments, and partnerships

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with leaders across the organization to ensure alignment on strategic initiatives, insights, trends, and capabilities

  • Represent The Hartford in external networks and participate in stakeholder engagement opportunities on ESG issues, including among shareholders, regulators, employees, brokers, customers, and community organizations

  • Partner with leaders from strategic sourcing and real estate operations, underwriting and investment operations on efforts to decarbonize The Hartford’s businesses, operations and investment portfolio and make progress towards its net zero by 2050 goal

  • Assist in the development and implementation of ESG data & IT solutions to support The Hartford’s ESG reporting, goals, and strategies

  • Support special projects and initiatives across the organization to further The Hartford’s comprehensive sustainability strategy

  • Support The Hartford’s sustainability communications strategy and strategic affiliations with third party organizations and NGO’s

  • Develop and participate in programs to raise awareness and educate employees on ESG topics that impact The Hartford

  • Support meetings of the Sustainability Governance Committee, a senior management oversight body comprised of C-Suite leaders that oversees The Hartford’s ESG strategy

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience, ideally within the insurance, asset management or financial services sectors or in management consulting, including 3+ years’ experience in sustainability / ESG space in a large corporate setting required

  • Demonstrated experience leveraging strategic thinking and a passion for environmental and social issues and the ability to assess and incorporate insights from external market and policy trends into a corporate sustainability strategy

  • Experience leading development and implementation of strategic initiatives, including project management

  • High levels of competency in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships, operating strategically and cross-functionally to influence and drive outcomes, and providing broad leadership within the organization

  • Superior analytical & problem-solving skills, including the ability to encourage new ways of looking at problems, processes, and solutions, develop sound recommendations for furthering the company’s sustainability strategy

  • Superior communication skills, both oral & written; ability to deal confidently with all levels of the organization, including senior executives and business partners

  • Team player with outstanding inter-personal and organizational influencing skills; excellent stakeholder/relationship management skills and leadership behaviors

  • Strong knowledge of relevant ESG reporting frameworks, including TCFD, SASB and CDP, and domain expertise on external ESG trends and developments

  • Bachelor’s degree required, https://J.D. and/or https://M.B.A. or other relevant advanced degree a plus

  • Able and willing to travel as required, approximately 10-20% of the time

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$120,720 - $181,080
