Position summary

The Group Benefit Operations Manager will lead the day-to-day operations of a team of approximately 13-15 staff in our Billing Organization. One of the main functions of the Premium Billing team is to ensure The Hartford’s customers are calculating and remitting the proper premium due for the Group insurance benefits that they purchased, including new and existing policyholders. The Manager is responsible to lead and coach this team and partner with key areas across Group Benefits. This includes monitoring daily volumes and work assignments, daily and weekly demand and capacity planning for the team, driving process improvements and building/improving partnerships with internal business partners.

Responsibilities

  • Front-line supervisor responsible for managing a medium sized team of Premium Billing Analysts (13-15 FTEs)

  • Responsible for delivering on service levels for the team and inventory management

  • Accountable for team performance supporting business metrics and scorecard reporting

  • Coordinate with Underwriting, Sales Reps, Account Managers, Finance, and external partners to communicate premium reconciliation issues

  • May involve external discussions with customers, TPAs or producers

  • Ability to lead through difficult conversations

  • Support and effectively resolve case level premium escalations

  • Facilitates a high-performance culture by aligning individual goals, differentiating performance through evaluation and recognition, and managing performance improvement issues swiftly and appropriately

  • Supports and fosters a continuous improvement mindset and culture

  • Supports and removes barriers or challenges which impact the team

  • Fosters an engaging team environment where all employees feel heard and valued

  • Focus on strategies that support an inclusive, collaborative work environment. 

  • Ensures all employees have clear objectives, performance reviews and receive ongoing coaching and feedback through regular coaching sessions

  • Understands and manage the components of turnover and retention

  • Collaborates with business partners to work across functional and organizational lines to understand the end-to-end customer experience and recommend improvements

  • Key Business areas may include: Underwriting, Account Manager, Billing Teams, Producer Services, Sales, Finance

  • Follows and adheres to expense management guidelines

Qualifications

  • 2+ year managerial experience required

  • Group Benefits and financial knowledge, including understanding of premium and billing processes impacts to other areas within the organization

  • Strong financial acumen or prior experience in Billing / Finance / Accounting experience

  • Proven track record of delivering strong results over time and fostering a high performing team environment.

  • Experience coaching and developing remote teams strongly preferred

  • Possesses exceptional interpersonal skills and strong influencing abilities.

  • Advanced Excel skills (V- LookUps, pivot tables, formulas etc)

  • Strong data analytics and interpretation of data

  • Strong organizing, planning, time management and delegation skills.

  • Demonstrates the ability to lead in ambiguous situations and execute on high level organization goals while utilizing strong change management skills

  • Strong communication and execution skills, delivers upon the expected outcomes of the organization consistently

  • B.S. / B.A. degree preferred with a strong preference for finance or accounting degree

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$66,960 - $100,440
