Responsibilities
The Hartford’s Energy team has a unique opportunity for an Underwriting Business Development Lead for our Renewable Energy unit. In addition to leading a team, this position will work as a member of the underwriting team, who provides specialized underwriting, insurance coverage and risk management services, supporting the profitable and rapid growth of the dedicated Energy practice. This position will collaborate to complete new and renewal business production underwriting, and work with dedicated service professionals at The Hartford to provide our customers with the industry’s best service, identify key energy agents/brokers, implement sales and marketing activities and demonstrate a strong customer focus and thorough understanding of The Hartford Energy practice’s appetite and strategy.
Distribution Management
Responsible for individual success as well as success of territory/broader team in region
Maintains successful individual book of business
Serves as sales leader for specified territory which includes responsibility for territory financials/sales plan; serves as agency-facing lead for specified agencies, demonstrating superior relationships with all brokers/agents
Conducts target agent sales planning and coaches’ underwriters within region; helps team develop stronger sales acumen through coaching
Generates robust pipeline/prospects to meet line of business appetite and achieve operating plan commitments
May run point on regular renewal and new business meetings within team, or lead other meetings as part of local operating norms
Leads by example with individual sales execution strategies to maximize client retention, new sales opportunities and net profitable growth
Manages business development initiatives in partnership with local leadership
Leadership and Talent Development
Serves as day-to-day contact for underwriters in the unit, regardless of official reporting relationships, serving as knowledge resource to develop high performing underwriting team
Provides input towards underwriter performance reviews within assigned territory
Responsible for coaching and mentoring underwriters
Supports talent pipelining and recruiting efforts, participating in interview and onboarding processes and soliciting external and internal talent interested in HIG career opportunities
Supports local talent strategies and engagement action plans, providing feedback and input to senior leaders
Provides backup coverage to Directors in region
Participates in some, but not all, leadership meetings at division and national levels
Partners with manager and other resources to develop self towards broader management opportunities
Referral & Quality
Maintains higher level of authority than individual contributor underwriters within team
Conducts QA and referrals for team as needed and in partnership with other management resources
Provides coaching to developing underwriters prior to accounts being referred
Coaches and assists underwriters on team to manage individual risk decisions to profitable underwriting results through asking questions about coverage and explaining coverage differences, utilizing competitive intelligence, providing a second set of eyes on recommendations, offering alternatives and using available resources to get create and flexible
Ensures that underwriting practices and guidelines are understood and adhered to, specifically focusing on pricing, risk selection, mix of business, flow management, and quality analysis
Qualifications
10+ years of competing P&C carrier underwriting experience, with agency/territorial management, superior technical knowledge; Energy and Umbrella Underwriting experience are required
Highly proficient in underwriting, with demonstrated ability to achieve successful book results, inclusive of NWP, TWP and profit while maintaining acceptable quality results
Thorough understanding of product knowledge, approaches to underwriting and pricing, risk appetite
Demonstrated potential for leadership and management responsibilities
Demonstrated ability and interest in developing other sales and underwriting talent through mentoring or coaching
Proven presentation abilities
Strong decision-making skills
Strong mathematical and analytical skills
This is a 100% Remote working Opportunity the selected candidate should reside within commuting distance to one of the locations posted
A clean driving record and ability to travel 50% of the time to assigned brokers and agents is required
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$122,560 - $183,840
