Do you want to build products that help shape the global knowledge economy? The Research Solutions Technology engineering team is responsible for the enterprise search technology that information professionals rely on for accurate and concise answers to their research questions. We are looking for a highly motivated engineer who will work closely with product owners, architects, and other senior-level engineers in the analysis, design, and implementation of the future evolution of TR’s search platform. Ideal candidates must “think big” and thrive on difficult problem-solving. They must also be outcome-based and able to quickly turn ideas into action.
About the Role
As a Lead Software Engineer, you will:
Show Leadership – lead a small team of developers to deliver features on time by giving solid technical direction.
Build and Develop – software applications by understanding user needs, writing well-designed code, conducting validation/testing, and executing full SDLC from design through release
Be a Team Player – work in a collaborative team-oriented environment, share information, value diverse ideas, partner with cross-functional and remote teams
Be Curious & Innovative – continuously update yourself with next-generation technology, development tools, and contribute to process development practices
Be an Agile Person – with a strong sense of urgency and a desire to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment to deliver solutions against strict timelines
Be an Effective Communicator – articulate complex technical issues, share ideas, participate in peer reviews, and exhibit strong listening skills
Take Ownership – responsible for performance, reliability and implementing changes for improving the efficiency of a technical component
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Lead Software Engineer if you have:
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelors or Masters (preferred) degree in computer science or a related field
5+ experience building, deploying and hosting applications (preferably AWS Cloud - 1 year)
Experience working as part of an agile project team, writing and estimating stories
Strong Java language development skills
Experience working with LINUX/Unix operating systems
Experience designing complex systems
Experience leading others in the design and development of complex software applications
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience building search engines with Lucene
Experience with Boolean search algorithms
Experience with various search result ranking algorithms (e.g., term frequency (TF-IDF), date ranking, custom relevance, etc.…)
Experience with natural language search algorithms
Experience with data structures and algorithms
Knowledge of XML and JSON
Experience building and maintaining distributed systems
Experience building CI/CD pipelines
Working knowledge of C++ and Python
Experience with using artificial intelligence models in evaluating and ranking search results
Experience with non-English term stemming and searching
Experience with performance tuning involving software and OS configurations
