Position summary

We are looking for a highly motivated individual that is excited about continually learning new things and being part of a fast-paced team that is delivering cutting edge solutions that drive new products and features that are critical for our customers.  As part of the Data Analytics team, you will be responsible for designing, developing and ensuring the quality, reliability and availability of key systems that provide critical data and algorithms to our award-winning Westlaw and Practical Law products. 

Responsibilities of this Lead Software Engineer role will include leading an Agile team of developers and testers in the design, analysis, development and testing of new features and products, while collaborating closely with business partners, stakeholders and other technology groups.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Drive the full life cycle of software delivery; including analysis, design, implementation and testing of new projects and features using Hadoop, Spark, Scala, Hive, AWS, EMR, S3, Lambdas, Selenium, Java, Elastic, XML, SQL, Oracle, and several open source tools and design patterns
  • Work closely with our business partners and stakeholders to identify requirements and priority of new enhancements and features and ensure that the stakeholders needs are being met
  • Lead a geographically diverse team of developer and testers.  Provide technical guidance and oversight to the team and provide mentorship and coaching to team members.
  • Drive the Agile process for the team including grooming the backlog, identify and creating stories and tasks, planning releases and iterations, prioritizing work with the business partners, checking in on progress throughout the iteration, communicating status, risks and issues to stakeholders and leadership and continually looking for ways to improve the process
  • Working with the architects and other technology leaders in the group, help set the technical direction of the team and ensure that the work the team is doing fits with the larger organizational technology strategy
  • Actively participate in the development and testing of features for assigned projects with little to no guidance
  • Proactively share knowledge and best practices on using new and emerging technologies across all of the development and testing groups
  • Create, review and maintain technical documentation of software development and testing artifacts
  • Work collaboratively with others in a team-based environment
  • Identify and participate in the resolution of issues with the appropriate technical and business resources
  • Drive and contribute to project development estimates and timelines
  • Generate innovative approaches and solutions to technology challenges
  • Effectively balance and prioritize multiple projects concurrently

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4-year degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics or related studies
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience
  • Proven professional experience with leading software development teams
  • 3+ years of experience with Big Data technologies, such as Hadoop, Spark, Scala and Hive
  • 2-3 year of experience in AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, S3 etc) with combination of Python and exposure to Big Data/Hadoop (EMR, etc) will be added advantage
  • 3+ years of experience with Java and XML
  • 3+ years of experience with Oracle databases and SQL experience
  • Proven experience developing solutions for high-volume, scalable systems
  • Strong understanding of Agile development process and experience developing solutions using this methodology
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire for continual learning
  • Proven ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Take personal responsibility to impact results and deliver on commitments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Past experience working across geographical sites
