Position summary

Location: Open to TR Hub locations, including Dallas, Minneapolis, and McLean

Thomson Reuters is looking for a strong Outbound Product Marketing leader to help us build the future of work for the skilled professionals that we serve. Thomson Reuters builds industry leading software and information solutions which underpin the legal industry, justice system, and accounting profession. We also create software which ensures the efficient application of taxation across the world, supporting commerce and enabling the operation of governments and the economy.

As Thomson Reuters continues to transform its business, it strives to focus and elevate our product portfolio and to continuously improve the customer experience. Product Marketing, one recently centralized function, is poised to lead the transformation by empowering team members with the optimal level of training and development and by creating the highest standards for understanding market and customer insights and partnering with product, sales, and marketing. This will result in products and solutions that align to the most important needs of its clients and are successful by both customer and business measures. 

This role is part of a newly centralized Product Marketing team, which provides both dedicated customer segment support and centralized key functions. The Vice President of Outbound Product Marketing will enable the cultural changes needed to support our evolution. They will help build a leading team by identifying key capability gaps, building skills through training and coaching to fill those gaps, measure results and activate that training through new processes, ceremonies and artifacts.

Your role will be to help set the strategy and vision for Thomson Reuters in collaboration with product, sales, and marketing and execute against that vision with your team of creative professionals. This role will report to the Head of Product Marketing.

About the Role

In this opportunity as VP, Outbound Product Marketing - Government, you will: 

  • Global GTM Positioning and Messaging: Create global product & product portfolio positioning and messaging TR can use for any GTM channel including direct sales, digital and direct to customers. Partner with Inbound, marketing and Product Management to develop a collateral plan to best tell the product story. Work to create this collateral for sales and customers to clearly communicate the product story. Do market research to confirm the message resonates with customers.
  • Channel Strategy: Tailor marketing efforts (e.g., high touch vs. low touch) to segment needs. Manage long‐term attention to end‐users' demands not only for products, but also for the services the channel can offer; manage distribution costs through allocation of responsibility for channel flow performance to the chosen members of the channel; and the ability to maintain channel partners' positive incentives and motivations to execute on the specified channel design.
  • New Launch: Identify a clear launch strategy (e.g., owners, timeline) with compelling launch material by targeted segment (e.g., sales pitch, sales training, marketing materials, communication plan). Provide effective materials and extensive training to sales reps and channel partners before the launch date so that they are fully aware of our new product offering.
  • Product/Service Positioning: Develop compelling offerings - specific value propositions that translate specific features into tangible benefits for each customer or customer persona (e.g., CEO, CTO, CFO, procurement, BU heads, end-users). Understand and define clear upselling/cross-selling paths for our core propositions.
  • Market Support for Sales: Actively coach and build the skills of our sales force to articulate our value proposition. Our marketing / customer proposition team creates high quality flyers and Market Message materials for sales staff, that clearly describe technical features, competitive advantage, and benefits.
  • Ecosystem Management: Understand who the key influencers are (who set standards and specify products, either in the industry or down the value chain). And the defined resources and processes aimed at shaping the views of key industry influencers (e.g., regulatory bodies, analysts).
  • Expert Support to Sales: Support sales in key deals by providing expertise in presenting & discussing with customers, including but not limited to our view of the market, future trends, our product/business strategy, behavior of similar customer profiles.
  • Market Strategy Pricing: Leverage willingness to pay analysis to surface for product what a customer would be willing to pay. Identify the best ways to engage/talk with customers – 1:1 vs. focus groups. Clearly identify which personas to talk to and how to ask the right questions to get the answers.
  • Price Setting: Ability to handle deal negotiations and strategize with reps and give suggestions on how to structure deals. Employ different skillsets depending on scale of customers: need to understand pricing frameworks, deep understanding of how order capture works, order processing (different systems for each subsegment), manage pricing calculators, manage all the pricing exceptions, create discounting rules, who can discount to what level.

About You

You’re a fit for the role of VP, Outbound Product Marketing - Government if your background includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, MBA Preferred.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to inspire peers, senior management, executive leadership and/or board of directors.  
  • Demonstrated ability to understand commercial, technological and strategic drivers in order to build and execute multi-year strategy.  
  • Significant industry experience driving growth across a large portfolio of products and solutions.  
  • Demonstrated prior experience setting and driving successful delivery of complex product marketing campaigns.  
  • Experience successfully leading cross-functional teams to develop and execute go-to-market strategies and multi-channel marketing programs. 
  • Proven ability to establish a broad proposition vision and take ideas from concept through to successful release.  
  • Ability to understand and interpret fundamental workings and trends within a target industry.  
  • Proficiency in product commercialization and marketing.  
  • Superior client engagement skills, including proven ability to build and manage senior client relationships.  
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a physical or virtual team and develop and grow organizational talent.  
  • Develop high-value product marketing tools, set and monitor key product marketing metrics, drive sales and partnership enablement, and identify customer and market needs. 
  • Lead business planning and budgeting exercises.  
  • Attract, develop and retain high quality talent.  
  • Negotiation, complex problem solving, conflict management.
