    Position summary

    Reuters is looking for an ambitious Pharmaceuticals Correspondent to help anchor our coverage across Asia and produce agenda-setting stories. 

    The successful candidate will report on the fast-growing pharmaceutical industry across Asia, one that is becoming ever more crucial to the global supply chain for prescription medicines. China is the world’s biggest supplier of pharmaceutical ingredients and aims to rival multinational drugmakers in testing and developing novel treatments. Indian companies produce nearly one-fifth of the generic drugs used globally and is home to the Serum Institute, the world’s largest vaccine maker. Japan remains a center of innovative science for the pharma industry and is beginning to push back against paying some of the highest drug prices of any country. 

    The ideal candidate would serve as a partner to pharma industry reporters in Asia and globally, helping identify, report and write stories of global importance. 

    The reporter would be deeply sourced among pharmaceutical and biotech executives, government health officials and industry investors. The preferred location for the role is Tokyo, but open to be based in other Asia locations if a successful candidate is identified there.

    About the Role

    As our Pharmaceuticals Correspondent, you will: 

    • Develop a diverse range of sources that lead to scoops
    • Break exclusive news that rivals must follow
    • Lead and/or reinforce coverage of major news 
    • Report aggressively to hold pharmaceutical companies and the government agencies and health officials accountable  
    • Write insightful, in-depth stories on corporate strategy and significant new trends within the industry 
    • Demonstrate beat expertise and dominance
    • Work with a team of experienced reporters and editors writing about health and pharma from New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Europe and Asia

    About You

    As our Pharmaceuticals Correspondent, you will likely have:

    • Strong knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and regulations that govern it
    • Deep sourcing to be able to publish exclusive news that sets the agenda
    • Proven skill covering fast-breaking news
    • Proven record of bringing story ideas to fruition 
    • Ability to understand and dissect financial disclosures 
    • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment
    • Excellent news judgment and writing skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively with others across teams and geographies
    • At least three years’ experience reporting at a major news organization
