    Position summary

    Reuters is looking for a driven and insightful energy correspondent to break stories in Southern Africa. Based in Johannesburg, the post offers an enterprising reporter the opportunity to report on a wide range of topics, from the power crisis and push to transition from coal to renewable energy in South Africa, to the future of blockbuster gas projects in Mozambique that were halted due to security threats, the development of oil and gas finds off the coast of Namibia and efforts to boost exploration and production in Angola, the region’s biggest exporter of crude oil. Energy policy is evolving rapidly as countries around the world move toward cleaner fuels and seek to contain the impact of high oil prices and tight fuel supplies on inflation and consumer spending. The successful candidate will help ensure that Reuters wins the biggest stories impacting the trade flows of the world’s most traded commodity. You will report on how governments and energy companies in Southern Africa grapple with the energy transition and its consequences for efforts to transform developing economies. We need a reporter who can deliver scoops, shed light on the opaque energy market and develop deep sourcing in a secretive industry. As our Energy Correspondent, you will: Bring ideas, energy and enthusiasm Produce agenda-setting coverage for both our core energy and commodity markets and our media, investor and financial professional audience Cultivate high-level sources within governments and the energy industry, including company executives, investment bankers, industry associations and environmental groups Be fast and ensure Reuters clients get the news first while producing deeply reported, high-impact features Work closely with the global energy team and colleagues across the file on subjects ranging from OPEC and the oil majors to energy policy, climate change and the transition to renewable energy Please note, the deadline for applications is Sunday, 9th April, 2023. To be our Energy Correspondent, you will likely: Be a self-starter and excellent team player Have at least five years of professional journalism experience, including experience covering energy Have a proven ability to develop deep sources and break news Have an understanding of the key issues and players in the Southern Africa energy sector and the ability to explain them to a wide audience.
