Our Trust & Safety team's commitment is to keep our online community safe. We have invested heavily in human and machine-based moderation to remove harmful content quickly and often before it reaches our general community.

It is possible that this role will be exposed to harmful content as part of the core role/as part of project/ in response to escalation requests/by chance. As the Global Issue Policy Lead for Youth Safety & Wellbeing, you will be responsible for overseeing TikTok's global Youth Safety & Wellbeing policy strategy and for managing a team of Issue Policy Managers based out of varying regional offices. This team designs and consults on the enforcement of TikTok's Trust & Safety policies that capture potential risks to youth, including but not limited to physical harm, psychological harm, developmental harm, and risk of exploitation. Your core responsibilities will be to contemplate policy standards that honor child and adolescent wellbeing, and to lead the policy strategy of a team of experts who specialize in nuanced issues of child safety. You will consider the complexity with which different global regions perceive appropriate youth entertainment experiences, and adjust policies accordingly. As the Global Issue Policy Lead, you will be the company's internal lead of communication for all Youth Safety & Wellbeing policy efforts and you will co-lead cross-functional conversations with your colleagues in Trust & Safety, Data Science, Product, Legal, Public Policy, Communications, and more. This role requires generalized knowledge of core themes relevant to the adolescent experience: identity development, gender and sexuality, peer and family relationships, risk-taking behavior, etc. This role will report to the Head of Family Safety & Developmental Health.

What will I do in this role ?

  • Oversee the development of product policies that are relevant to TikTok's global community, with a focus on protecting youth from harmful content and potential exploitation.
  • Cultivate and maintain a psychologically safe, trusting team of Issue Policy Managers with a mindset to maximize both positive team camaraderie and significant business impact.
  • Collaborate tightly with your Issue Policy Lead peers to set a cohesive, unified vision for policy teams on youth safety.
  • Partner with adjacent Issue teams to identify when policy themes affect youth and how to best capture the nuanced needs of youth compared to adults in policy and product design.
  • Lead conversations with internal and external researchers to learn about regional perceptions of maturity and how those views can be adapted to our content policies.
  • Consult with Legal and Communications teams on high-profile escalations and provide information on how, if at all, content violated our community guidelines or policy standards.
  • Work with our Outreach & Partnerships team to identify and receive guidance from external Youth Safety & Wellbeing and Adolescent Wellness experts, as well as internal cross-functional partners, to critically analyze and continuously improve our safety policies.
  • Consult with the Leads of cross-functional teams on how features like Video, Comments, Follows, Likes, Accounts, etc. can be designed to reinforce our Youth Safety & Wellbeing risk policies. What should I bring with me?
  • 6+ years working in Policy, Prevention Science, Social Work, Child Advocacy or another field with a focus on themes of child or adolescent wellbeing.
  • 5+ years experience managing a team of direct reports with a high level of productivity and team harmony.
  • Demonstrated success working in a fast-paced technology company with effective project management, complex cross-functional project collaboration, and strategic execution.
  • Confident experience developing and refining policies that are designed to scale across global populations.
  • A solutions mindset to regularly assess team productivity and develop strategic roadmaps to best leverage team skillsets, topic expertise, or diverse perspectives required to bolster policy effectiveness.
  • Familiarity with international child protection laws and child rights advocacy, and an awareness for when to report content to child protection organizations.
  • Understanding of Trust & Safety positioning in the entertainment media technology sector, with comfort learning internal tools and product workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to educate a wide variety of business stakeholders including Content Creative, Product Policy, Engineering, Public Policy, Legal, Communications, and Data Science on the nuances of Youth Safety & Wellbeing topics.

Nice to have.

  • Experience working in non-western cultures, or knowledge of variations in culture and values across diverse populations.
  • Familiarity designing codebooks, measures, questionnaires, surveys, etc. that are vetted for construct validity and rater reliability.
