    Who we’re looking for

    Toyota’s Powertrain Design and Evaluation Department (PDE) is looking for a passionate, highly-motivated Design Engineer with an interest in Electrified PT system design.

    The primary responsibilities of this role are hybrid electric transaxle component and system design and will include:

    • Work with suppliers to design and develop power electronic systems for inverters, converters, and other power electronic circuits.
    • Integration of electrified drive units and power electronics into vehicle design prioritizing safety, customer appeal, competitiveness, and on-time development.
    • Coordinate development activities including supplier sourcing, cost analysis and cost reduction activities (with Purchasing and Suppliers) and up through validation and launch, including problem solving of technical issues.
    • Partner with design engineers in Japan and local Suppliers for the design and development of local component design.
    • Participate in design, evaluation, and manufacturing activities at the event location locally and internationally (as necessary).
    • Report to upper management and external departments.

    Reporting to the Senior Manager, the person in this role will support the PTD’s objective to build “World Class Powertrains in North America”

    What you’ll be doing

    • Power electronics (Inverters, Converters, Chargers) design with suppliers and vehicle integration with affiliates and Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan).
    • Interfacing with key stakeholders (such as motor designers, powertrain controls, body design, purchasing and assembly plants).
    • Highly motivated self-starting working style to manage and own leadership of projects. General understanding and application of standard engineering theory, principles and problem solving.
    • Applying Toyota Design Process and Standards, outputting deliverables such as Design Specs, 3D models, 2D drawings, technical reports, and instruction sheets.
    • Attending routine Design Reviews and reporting key metrics of your design such as durability, performance, cost, and mass versus design targets.
    • Process improvements, advancing PTD’s design process capability to improve quality and on-time delivery of design deliverables.
    • Understand supplier part production process flow, supply chain and assembly process to find cost reduction and quality improvement ideas.
    • Benchmarking competitor designs to ensure our competitiveness.
    • Training in the Toyota Way.

    What you bring

    • Experience in power electronics design/development.
    • Familiarity with analog and digital circuit design and automotive power electronics.
    • Bachelor of Science (or above) with an Engineering
    • Demonstrable CAD skills (CATIA V5 or Creo).
    • Proficiency with Excel and Powerpoint.
    • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Team-oriented thinking and a “can-do” attitude.

    What you may bring

    • Master’s Degree in engineering.
    • Experience in design of power electronics with focus on automotive industry.
    • Experience with electric machine (motor) design and controls
    • Experience with CREO, Windchill, and typical powertrain CAE design software (Matlab/Simulink, Spice, ANSYS suites, etc).
    • Hands-on experience with prototyping and testing
    • Experience in EMC design, analysis, evaluation
    • Expertise in GD&T and typical powertrain manufacturing methods and production processes.
    • Working knowledge of quality inspection methods, calculate 3sigma and process capability methods. Work with supplier quality and plant quality to review part quality inspection reports.
    • A working knowledge of DRBFM.
    • A working knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles
    • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
