Position summary

About the Role

The Core Networking team, within the Global Network Infrastructure organization, is seeking a Senior Network Engineer who will help design, build, and operate next-generation network solutions to increase the efficiency, reliability, performance and agility of Uber’s global production network.

The team is looking for someone with a passion for building large scale networks, observability and operational tooling, and with an automation focus. We are looking for someone who can grow into a leader within this team, and is happy to both teach and learn. Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant network engineering and automation experience.
  • Experience with network design & operations in two or more areas, including: datacenter, backbone, edge, and/or cloud networking.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, e.g. Python, Go, Java, and/or C/C++.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, ascend and descend ladders, and other physical labor as needed in support of normal datacenter operations

What the Candidate Will Do

  • Experience as a technical lead within a team and ability to work cross functionally comfortably
  • Deep experience with L1-L3 Networking, routing and switching, BGP, and experience within Juniper and Arista environments
  • Data center experience, and L1 experience with various optical components, cabling solutions, and best practices. You have designed, built, and operated a network from zero to 1.
  • Experience in a large scale network environment, with thousands of network devices to manage, and thousands of critical services that depend on the network.
  • Experience with network configuration management automation technologies
  • Experience with network monitoring technologies (e.g. SNMP, Netflow, Flow analysis, streaming telemetry, OpenConfig).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to write detailed design documents.
  • You have a knack for helping the team grow by inspiring and mentoring less experienced engineers. You seek out and enjoy opportunities to help others grow.
  • You have great interpersonal skills, deep technical ability, and a portfolio of successful execution. You are open-minded to discuss various technical approaches and able to drive consensus across various stakeholders at Uber.
  • A relentless desire to build each network better than the last. Treat networking, operational efficiency, and automation as sciences with room for artful breakthroughs.
  • You are passionate about leveraging software innovations to automate network management, improve network observability, and remediate problems.
  • Comfortable being a strong advocate for the org, and ability to represent our team within Uber Engineering in informal and formal (presentations) settings.
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related engineering field.
