Position summary

About the Role

Uber Systems Engineers help Uber grow its service to more people around the world by operating and improving our production fleet and the supporting systems that allow us to scale our hardware infrastructure gracefully and optimally. In this role, you will be instrumental in helping us build depth by solving complicated open-ended and systemic hardware problems in our production fleet.

What you’ll do

You will use your systems engineering, hardware/Linux OS/kernel knowledge and infrastructure systems experience to investigate and tackle ambiguous problems in our production fleet, while also contributing to roadmap, new systems design, improvement of existing tools and systems, to enable even greater efficiency and insight.

  • Build, maintain and evolve tooling, processes and systems that increase efficiency of our monitoring->alerting->ticketing->repair workflows
  • Lead investigative efforts into high-visibility systemic issues found in the fleet, presenting regularly with key peers, TPMs, hardware engineers on status, critical issues and hand-offs
  • Contribute to road-mapping, design and architecture of our ticketing systems, workflow automation, and data access methods
  • See something, say something. Bring your experience and insight to bear in driving strategy around tooling, automation to make our fleet more reliable and scalable

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant software and/or DevOps engineering experience
  • BS degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field, оr equivalent industry experience
  • Hardware/Linux OS/Kernel troubleshooting - you should have strong experience and affinity for solving challenging problems that are often at the intersection of hardware and software (BIOS, firmware, driver, kernel, config)
  • Systems thinking and passion: You should have strong experience in Linux environments and think about systems top to bottom - corner cases, scalability, failure modes, etc.
  • Solid background in multiple programming languages, e.g. Go, Java, Python or C/C++
  • Automate everything bias: You should have an instinct and intuition to automate whatever you can and improve the efficiency of our processes
  • Collaboration bias: you should have an inherent aim to collaborate, both within the team and across orgs
  • Excellent written and verbal soft skills, and the ability to write detailed design documents
  • A belief that your team can accomplish more together than as separate individuals
  • Attention to detail, particularly around software engineering fundamentals, testing methodologies, and quality
  • Strong sense of ownership, purpose, and initiative to fix problems and optimize systems that are both inside and outside your area of responsibility

Preferred Qualifications

  • ServiceNow. Standard methodologies knowledge and experience in designing and building ServiceNow ITSM for efficient efficiency in break/fix operations
  • Infra experience: a proven understanding of infra essentials: DHCP, PXE, DNS, TCP/IP, imaging solutions, packaging, kernel tuning, debugging, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Proven impact in a DevOps/SRE environment
  • Configuration management. Real world experience with something like Puppet, Chef, Salt, Ansible.
  • Hardware knowledge. Understanding of hardware standards, trends, and benchmarking in hardware lifecycle management
