Assistant Site Manager - Locomotive Maintenance

The Location

The Barstow facility is located just off historic route 66 in the Mojave Desert. The facility, originally a “Sante Fe” facility, is one of the top 3 employers in the area and growing. In 2019, the facility was expanded to incorporate an intermodal yard and many more expansions are in the works. We are also a “test bed” for new technology, notably the dual-fuel prototype and most recently the FLXDrive battery freight locomotive demonstration have been based out of Barstow.

The city of Barstow and surrounding area are extremely diverse – both in Culture and geography. The city is 60 miles away from some of the best skiing in the world (Big Bear), 2 hours from the ocean, slightly more than 2 hours away from Las Vegas, we are surrounded by the best off-roading and ATV areas you can find in the country, and if hiking is more your thing there are hundreds of miles of trails for all skill levels.

The Position

The Assistant Site Manager is the second in command over a team of 10 - 15 highly trained subject matter experts, all assisting our customer in keeping their locomotives running at optimal levels.

This dynamic and energetic individual will touch all aspects of shop management. This role provides foundational knowledge and experience that sets the groundwork for continued career growth and exposure.

A few of the major tasks and responsibilities that this role is responsible include, but are not limited to, training locomotive maintenance technicians (TA’s), overseeing the tooling/repair processes, higher level work planning and troubleshooting with the customer (BNSF Railway), defining and creating work scopes, reviewing upcoming projects, and other tasks as required to keep the shop running properly and to ensure the customer is fully supported.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide technical expertise to railroad employees and management as well as Wabtec employees, including troubleshooting, material handling, tooling, safety procedures, and contract requirement clarification
  • Lead a technical team and provide training / mentorship to the customer and Wabtec employees
  • Manage and provide instruction on key programs and procedures
  • Provide clear communication to customer employees, customer management and management on work to be performed, equipment status, productivity, and process improvements, and liaison with other departments as necessary
  • Work with customer employees and management to promote, maintain, and drive continuous improvement in safe work practices while monitoring productivity, quality assurance, and adherence to contract requirements
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, OSHA work practices, and industry / site specific work rules
  • Make risk assessments balancing customer requests with Wabtec requirements
  • Establish production plan for labor, material, and logistics
  • Work with various software systems (MS Office, Oracle, Access Databases) to manage material, labor plans, and other systemic requirements

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Formal Education

  • Bachelors’ degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university

    • Or a High School Diploma / GED + 4 years of military experience (preferably in a maintenance related specialty)
    • Or a High School Diploma / GED + a minimum of 4 years of operations experience
    • Or associate degree in technical discipline + a minimum of 2 years professional work experience
  • Currently Level II certified, or the ability to obtain the certification within 18 months of starting

  • Work Experience

    • Minimum of 3 years of operations, services, engineering, or military experience
    • Proficiency in MS office applications
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Previous experience, or the ability to be successful in, a customer facing job function 
  • Eligibility Requirements

    • Ability and willingness to work in a maintenance shop environment on various shifts/days as required
    • The ability to maintain reliable and predictable attendance
    • A high level of dependability, a great attitude, and an ability to work well with a team towards achieving a common goal
