Nordco (a Wabtec company) is an American manufacturer of railroad maintenance of way and inspection equipment, based in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Founded in 1926, it has been a subsidiary of Wabtec since 2021. The company is one of the top manufacturers of railroad maintenance equipment in North America. 

Designs functional, reliable, cost effective products or systems within cost targets and while maintaining project schedule. Supports Production by hands-on review and troubleshooting.

*This role can be permitted to work with a Hybrid Schedule. Expectations are to work remotely 2 days per week. Onsite days are expected 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

Design – 60% or greater

  • Plans and organizes design work on individual components or pieces as assigned by the Project Leader.
  • Uses CAD systems to layout, design and modify existing equipment and produce drawings for new or existing equipment.
  • Performs engineering calculations on new and existing designs.
  • Maintains individual design schedule to ensure on-time completion as determined by Project Leader.
  • Creates designs within pre-defined schedule and cost targets and supports implementation in Production.

General – 20% - 40%

  • Advise Project Leader on a regular basis as to the status of the design. 
  • Creates and maintains bills of materials and writes engineering change orders.
  • Interfaces with others during the design, building and field-testing of prototypes or production models – i.e. Production, Testing, Sourcing, Planning, Suppliers or Customers.
  • Presents and participates in design reviews.
  • Meets requirements on function, reliability, safety and performance of equipment operation.

Equipment 20% - 40%

  • Troubleshoot and solve equipment problems.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology

Experience

  • 3 plus years in industry related field.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Experienced in 3D CAD modeling. Proficiency in Pro E Creo is preferred
  • Mechanism analysis using standard methods (hand calculations) and/or computer simulation (mechanica preferred).
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude

Preferred

  • Experience in design structures and mechanisms
  • Experience with electrical control and hydraulic systems.

Travel

  • Less than 25%

Working Conditions  

Work is primarily light duty and requires the ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds. This position requires the ability to sit, stand and walk unassisted. Requires the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is required to talk and hear. Normal correctable vision is required.
