Role Summary:

Vehicle Control is a key subsystem of the locomotive, overseeing over a dozen critical system-level control functions such as trainline control, mode control, network architecture and automatic engine start-stop, as well as on-board monitoring and diagnostics for the locomotive control system.  The Vehicle Control engineer is responsible for design and implementation of system-level controls algorithms and the control platform architecture for Heavy haul, power haul and transit locomotives from inception through final product validation. 

In this role the engineer will work with customers, suppliers, engineering functions and/or industry agencies to identify and capture requirements and execute the design. The engineer will define the control network and architecture to meet the system level and sub system level design requirements. The engineer will utilize experience and expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and effect short-term and some long-term business goals.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Review and refine system-level requirements to understand design intent and reconcile with control system capabilities

  • Execute the design and development for locomotive control systems including function definition, requirements development, dynamic analysis, and failure modes analysis

  • Define subsystem requirements to control applications, embedded software architecture, and hardware architecture to meet system-level functional requirements

  • Specify interfaces among control functions within software, and among hardware components

  • Execute the analysis, design, test, and integration required to define and support assigned systems or functions to meet program / product requirements using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards

  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews

  • Utilize simulation lab and locomotive test assets to refine designs

  • Support and interface with Independent Test Team (ITT) to resolve design defects and deliver a validated product

  • Prepare and present technical design decisions and results to internal and external customers as necessary

  • Ensure that the proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks is consistent with engineering policies and procedures

  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business

  • Plan work for assigned projects and product features as input to integrated project plans

  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments to management

  • Drive process improvements and simplification initiatives to improve quality and productivity

  • Execute a variety of projects from follow-on orders through new product developments, ensuring proper definition of requirements and interfaces for locomotive control systems

  • Lead/support investigation, root-cause identification, and resolution of reliability issues including communicating to a wider business audience

  • Support proposals, controls, software, simulator, manufacturing, test and field services team

  • Participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and other business needs

  • Interact with internal and external customers, vendors, and industry agencies pursuing and own technical interaction with a supplier for targeted areas of vehicle control and network design area

Qualification / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Electronics or Instrumentation Engineering
  • About 3 to 5 years of relevant industry experience
  • At least 1 year of design experience in a control engineering domain.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as Ethernet, UART and USART communication
  • Good knowledge on networking protocol, network layers for embedded systems
  • Experience with control network design, diagnostics, and test
  • Ability and willingness to work "hands-on" in test labs and on locomotives with high HP (1000 KVA), medium voltage (2 KV) and high current (10 KA) systems
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

Desired

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience with Matlab / Simulink or other modeling tools
  • Experience with use of SysML for system requirements, architecture, and V&V modeling
  • Experience with software development & validation, preferably C++
  • Experience with design & validation of electro-mechanical systems, especially locomotive and/or off-highway
  • Experience with requirements management tools like DOORS
  • Experience with Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) tools (i.e. FMEA, Score Cards, Trade off)
  • Experience with problem solving tools and techniques (Solution Tree, Cause and Effect)
  • Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
  • Solid oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Team player with ability to work with minimal direction
  • Strong organizational skills and prior success in working with or leading cross-functional teams
  • Ability to multi-task & prioritize effectively
  • MS Office proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint, word etc)
