This role can be located in Fort Worth, TX or Erie, PA.

Role Summary/Purpose:

The MCA controls & applications engineer is responsible for design, development, and testing of control functions spanning across all locomotive subsystems with controls content.  This position provides a unique opportunity to interact with all locomotive subsystems with controls content, and thus quickly gain a broad understanding of locomotive control and operation.  The successful Lead Applications Engineer will efficiently execute the design, development, and test processes, while managing tradeoffs with respect to project priorities.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers as they execute the design and development for locomotive control systems including function definition, requirements development, dynamic analysis, and failure modes analysis
  • Plan individual and subteam work for assigned projects and product features as input to integrated project plans
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
  • Drive process improvements and simplification initiatives to improve quality and productivity
  • Review and refine system-level requirements to understand design intent and reconcile with control system capabilities
  • Design control application architectures which are robust against expected configurability needs, thus limiting the impact through appropriate modularity and abstraction
  • Define control requirements and allocate to applications to meet system-level functional requirements
  • Define interfaces among control applications within software
  • Support V&V through advancement of MIL and SIL capabilities and processes
  • Prepare and present technical design decisions and results to internal and external customers as necessary
  • Ensure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business
  • Provide technical support for proposal development

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Computer Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years’ engineering experience
  • Ability and willingness to support hands-on validation in simulation laboratory and on-locomotive
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

Desired Characteristics:

  • Ability to prioritize and manage tradeoffs effectively with a small team to meet overall objectives
  • Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to influence stakeholders, solve problems, and deliver results
  • Effective verbal & written communicator
  • 3+ years experience with Matlab / Simulink
  • 3+ years experience with use of SysML for system requirements, architecture, and V&V modeling
  • Experience with design & validation of electro-mechanical systems, especially locomotive and/or off-highway vehicles and auxiliary systems
  • Working knowledge of Wabtec locomotives & control system functionality
  • Strong organizational skills and prior success in working with or leading cross-functional teams
