Nordco (a Wabtec Company) is an American manufacturer of railroad maintenance of way and inspection equipment, based in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Founded in 1926, it has been a subsidiary of Wabtec since 2021. The company is one of the top manufacturers of railroad maintenance equipment in North America.

Summary

Perform software creation and documentation for railroad mobile equipment.  Manage designs to be reliable and efficient while maintaining project schedule.

Responsibilities

Design – 60%

• Design electrical controls and user interface software for entire mobile machines and other complex, large-scale projects
• Collaborate with team members during the software design process
• Lead and participate in design reviews
• Provide technical product support through all project design phases
• Communicate and collaborate cross-functionally with internal and external parties

Support – 20%

• Support bug resolution and feature improvement activities for production machines
• Develop, review, and update functional and technical specification documents
• Assist with the development of technical publications, such as operator and maintenance manuals

Testing – 10%

• Conduct bench-top and field tests for new and existing components or subsystems to validate functionality
• Ensure that designs meet requirements on function, reliability, safety, and performance of equipment operation
• Interface with others during the building and field testing of prototypes and production machines

General – 10%

• Mentor, support, and guide other engineers on designs and best practices
• Monitor individual design schedule to ensure completion as determined by manager
• Advise manager on a regular basis as to the status of ongoing projects

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software/Computer/Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
• Knowledge of programming, user interfaces, and PCs
• 1 year of related experience

Preferred:

• Experience with industrial automation or mobile machine design
• 8+ years prior engineering experience
• Experience in Linux OS distribution
• Experience with electrical control and hydraulic systems
• Familiarity with CAN based controls

Technical Skills

• Ability to translate design requirements into practical and reliable software designs
• Knowledge of object-oriented software design patterns
• Familiarity with State flow software design
• Proficient with C++, Qt, and QML
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Mechanical aptitude to physically work on machinery

Behavioral Attributes

• Demonstrated individual project management skills (maintaining scope and schedule) on projects

Travel

• Less than 10%

Working Conditions  

Work is primarily light duty and requires the ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds. This position requires the ability to sit, stand and walk unassisted. Requires the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to talk and hear. Normal correctable vision is required.
