Summary

The Test Engineer II will be responsible for the test and validation of engineering designs. They will create and manage a testing plan to validate new equipment. Job task typically involve working closely with engineering to accurately define tests including procedure, acceptance criteria and developing any fixturing or test stands as necessary. Determine how to best collect data during test, analyzing and interpreting the results, then sharing findings with the engineering team in a clear and concise format. Duties will also include leading field testing, collecting quantitative and qualitative data, tracking performance targets. As field testing lead, become a technical expert to provide direction as well as hands on troubleshooting and repair of units under test. Typical areas requiring troubleshooting expertise would be hydraulics, electrical, CAN, structural, mechanical and engine.

*This role can be permitted to work with a Hybrid Schedule. Expectations are to work remotely 2 days per week. Onsite days are expected 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage test plans
  • Write test procedures, execute tests, and document results using photos, tabular and graphical representations of data, reference materials, and clear explanation of results.
  • Provide expertise on instrumentation, data collection and DoE
  • Provide direction to R&D Technicians, as well as hands on involvement in the setup and execution of tests.
  • Communicate results with others effectively, both verbally and in writing via formal technical reports
  • Analyze data, applying statistical problem-solving techniques.
  • Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative machine performance data during field test
  • Maintain detailed records of machine performance and field conditions, during field test
  • Identify and document performance trends, working closely with engineering to make improvements to reliability, durability, and efficiency.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems with test equipment or units under test
  • Provide detailed information regarding field component failures and work with design engineers to determine root cause and implement corrective actions

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (mechanical or electrical preferred)

Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in a relevant field
  • Experience with heavy equipment
  • Experience with hydraulic and electronic control systems
  • Railroad industry experience is a plus
  • Experience with data acquisition and test equipment preferred
  • Experience with c++, Rstudio, and Arduino is a plus
  • Experience with DFSS or DMAIC is a plus

  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects at deadlines at one time
  • Strong analytical mindset and skills
  • High degree of computer fluency
  • Requires high electrical aptitude
  • Requires mechanical aptitude
  • Read and interpret drawings, charts, schematics, and product specifications

Travel

  • Up to 50%

Working Conditions  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. Temperatures can range from extreme cold to extreme heat. Travel to remote job sites is required.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls and talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand, climb, walk unassisted, sit and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
