This Business Development role is a client-facing sales position that will develop new data commercialization business opportunities within the Walmart Data Ventures organization.  You will be responsible for identifying and generating external leads, then moving these opportunities through the sales pipeline from prospect to contract.  In this process you will partner with internal stakeholders such as the Product, Operations and Technology teams to support your business development efforts.  As the business matures, this role will continue to evolve.

Key Responsibilities

An individual must be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Utilize a consultative approach to evaluate new business opportunities, deal-sizing, analyze competitors, recommend strategies, and lead proposal/face-to-face negotiations to win new business 
  • Responsible for developing a plan to meet or exceed a sales quota
  • Proactively prospect into strategic Walmart supplier organizations via cold call, email, and social strategies
  • Follow through with all aspects of the sales cycle – from initial prospecting, managing internal communication, reviewing deal terms, to contract execution 
  • Consistently deliver superior customer service to partners, and be seen as a trusted thought partner demonstrating the Walmart values 
  • Provide guidance and forecasting to leadership on all pipeline sales opportunities
  • Prepare and deliver effective presentations and go-to-market proposals to senior level decision makers
  • Be a subject matter expert and evangelist of the Walmart Luminate collaborative portal solutions
  • Understand our buyer personas and the needs and “pains” of our target market
  • Update and keep detailed notes in our CRM (Salesforce)
  • Brainstorming and executing new strategies to attract our target market
  • Keeping up to date on trends and news from the industry, our competitors, and our target market
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures and supports company mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity by implementing related action plans; utilizing and supporting the Open-Door Policy; and providing direction and guidance on applying these in executing business processes and practices. 

Key Qualifications

An individual must be proficient in each of the competencies listed below to successfully perform the responsibilities of this position.

  • Proven work experience as a Business Development Executive, Sales Account Executive, or similar role
  • BS or BA degree in Marketing, Business, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with multiple sales techniques (including cold calls)
  • Track record of achieving or exceeding specific sales quotas
  • Experience in developing, negotiating, and closing multi-year SaaS and data commercialization contracts
  • Extensive professional network and contacts within CPG and Retail
  • Passion for data analytics and some experience as a business user/consumer of data/analytics ideal 
  • Familiarity with MS Office Suite (analyzing spreadsheets and charts)
  • Experience with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce)
  • Understanding of sales performance metrics
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management and organization skills
  • Self-starter who has a desire to learn, grow, and excel in their role

Entry Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, or related field and 4 years’ experience in business development, market development, product development, or related area OR 6 years’ experience in business development, market development, product development, or related area.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, or related field

• 10+ years’ sales experience in SaaS, data, analytics, and associated services
• 10+ years’ sales experience selling to CPG and Retail
• 5+ years’ sales experience in new business development
