Women who work in health departments have an overall job satisfaction level of 4.3, 75% of them believe there is gender equality in their firms, and make an average salary range of $50k-$80k.
NYC does not currently offer unionized employees paid parental leave. You must use accrued vacation/sick time. Official policies can be strict and very un-family friendly (no remote work officially permitted, alternate work schedule difficult, cannot work split shift, cannot easily switch between full-time and part-time employment). Some policies, however, are very family-friendly (35 hour work week, 12 days sick leave/yr which roll over and generous vacation leave).
I have been here for a few years and there are a lot of women, many in managerial, director and VP roles. The pay is good, benefits are on par with all large companies. All in all I really enjoy it here and would highly recommend.

I would focus on networking like crazy and establishing credibility and a name for yourself before going on maternity leave, only because after children it gets much more difficult to attend networking events, and having a strong network and solid reputation is critical to be successful at the firm.
