The policies and benefits are wonderful for women and those with families, but it is still important to set some boundaries in order to make life as a Big Law lawyer feasible with a family. In my experience, most folks at Ropes will respect those boundaries but it is incumbent upon you to put them in place.

  • Took Maternity Leave Here? (Weeks)

    23 paid / unpaid

The policy is 18 weeks at full pay, plus whatever vacation and unpaid time you would like to add on to that. I took an additional 5 weeks of vacation (you may roll over unused vacation time from the prior year) and one week unpaid. You are also responsible for reimbursing the firm for any benefits during your unpaid time. It is typical for women to take a full 6 months off for maternity leave.

Men and women on the sales floor are encouraged to look their best, with good reason. It's directed at all sexes, so while it might seem a bit constrictive, it isn't sexist in nature and appeals to the idea that an associate is really selling the brand.

Full time positions allowing for family friendly hours are few and far between. Your best bet for those is probably a support position rather than a sales position. Part time positions definitely seem more flexible no matter which department.
  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. There seem to be a few instances in which some members of management prefer to work with and communicate better with men, and it can be very frustrating.

I think this is a great firm but a little old fashioned. The partners are very open to change and are actively looking for ways to promote more women.

  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. The firm is trying really really hard to do better but female partnership is low and female associates are often treated more harshly in reviews and given less responsibility than male associates. That being said, the partners have agreed to undergo sensitivity training to try to address these issues. Maternity leave is 3 months paid plus 3 months of FMLA supplemented pay, but if you take 6 months you don't get a bonus.

I think GE has one of the greatest cultures I have seen and there havent been instances of blatant discrimination that I have seen. However, there continues to be a subconscious bias towards women & the responsibilities they should be taking.

I think there is flexibility on location, but little flexibility on time off/sick leave. We are told we can take time off, however, when we're off we are constantly contacted & expected to answer. If you take sick leave, it is held against you during performance reviews.

Willkie is a fabulous firm to work for at the beginning of your career. In recent years, the number of women in the entry-level class of lawyers is on part or greater than the number of men. That number changes, dramatically, a few years in because of disparate treatment in training, work assignments, and promotion.

It's consulting - it's long hours, and extra work isn't billable. Flexibility is very depending on your project team.

  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. If you can get a good salary and level coming in, internally promotions etc. are all very structured and I think fairly executed. But if you come on at a lower level or start with a mediocre pay rate, you will never get out of that cycle. You'll always be behind.
