In 2018, I watched a "good old boy" Associate Attorney be promoted to partner, backed by multiple other male partners. Also up for partnership at the time was a female Associate Attorney who had started at Hinshaw the same time as the good old boy and was in the same class year. Nobody backed her for partnership, and it wasn't because of her performance. She left the firm because of it. Women have a more difficult time being promoted.

Think twice. It’s a comfortable place and generous for parental leave, but as a single woman, you may be faced with sexism, racism and predatory co-workers.

Ageism and sexual harassment are pervasive. For a non-profit that claims to work for social justice, this place is toxic.

Recommend to Women?
No

It is largley comprised of women, but is not a great place for mothers or women with lives outside of their career as the hours are long and there is little divide between work and home life given the large work volume that often requires working nights and weekends.

The culture of the firm is fairly flat but there are other aspects, such as schedule flexibility and some degree of transparency with leadership, that are beneficial.

With a firm of about 200 attorneys at least 3/4 are women. However, almost every male attorney is promoted within a couple years.

Opportunities abound - there is a non-hierarchical culture and, whilst it is a hard working culture, it is not unreasonable and is very collegiate
