    Salaried (management) positions offer much more flexibility than hourly ones. Department managers create their own schedules so they are able to be flexible with the hours they work themselves and can help accommodate the hours of the employees in their departments. If employees change their availabilities or have to call out of a shift to take care of family, etc. they are given 4 excused absences per year without penalization.

    Their maternity leave policy isn't great and they offer zero paid paternity leave. It makes it difficult for people who have children to comfortably take time off of work without struggling financially.

    Maybe. It is easy to move into management as a woman here. If you are planning on starting or growing your family, short-term disability is a must since their maternity leave policy has a lot of strings attached for such a short period of time (6 weeks paid after 18 months of service with company followed by a two year contract). Family insurance policy is also very expensive for a salaried employee let alone an hourly one.

Unfortunately, men will have the same job as you and be paid several thousand dollars a year more, regardless of their qualifications in comparison to yours. I have worked here for about 5 years and most of the administrative roles at low and mid-levels are women, while the overwhelming majority of high level admin and "power" roles are occupied by men. The division in which I work, for example, has only male department chairs despite departments having excellent and competent female professors. There is no childcare on campus, but there was about a decade ago. Faculty often bring their new babies in when needed, but staff aren't able to get away with this. This is made more difficult by their only being about 2 "infant care" centers in town. Most women end up having to leave their jobs, taking Family Medical Leave for 12 weeks (unpaid) while the University is legally obligated to hold your job for you (on top of your 6 weeks "maternity leave") or hiring private, unlicensed individuals to take care of their infants if they return to work.

    Maybe. Women are paid less for the same job men do. There is almost no maternity leave. I believe it's 6 weeks off without salary, but instead you are paid a taxable $800 over that 6 weeks. In order to get more substantial funds during maternity leave you must have signe dup for Supplemental Disability when you are first hired to UCSC (not when you start any new job on the campus) yet HR doesn't make you aware of this crucial fact that most heavily effects women.

Women are actually occupying many of the higher level positions here. However, women do not make as much money as men and you really need to push very hard during the negotiation stage. There is always more money available than they want you to believe. Also, maternity leave is not frowned upon here and people cover for you as much as possible when you're out.

You may be initially moved ahead quite quickly because the company is so male-dominated, and they are trying to get it more equal. It's very easy to stall at the dept. manager level, though. It's retail, in any case; overworked and underpaid. It's easy to get pulled in to a sense of community - don't.

In order to work for this corporate giant you have to have a very thick skin. They let you know all the time you are a dime a dozen and easily replaced. You have to be willing to put family life on hold because it's very hard to get time off when you want/need it. The upside of this company is it's fairly easy to move up the corporate ladder in a reasonable amount of time.
