Senior Director, Human Resources

Cisco takes opportunity for all sincerely. I have had amazing career opportunities, and also been able to very successfully be a single mom while working at Cisco when my son was younger, although not as fast of a growth trajectory.

Some roles have less flexibility, due to customer commitments.

OfficeMax had a very respectful, family-friendly and inclusive culture. Office Depot does not have the same reputation.

Shire

Senior Director, R&D (non-lab)

January 1970

In R&D, most of the leadership is male, but individual departments do have a better balance of men and women (my department head is male but his direct reports are half and half). Family friendliness and flexibility does depend in part on one's individual manager; my boss does not have kids but has been very understanding if I need to deal with kid stuff - as long as I get my work done, he doesn't keep close tabs on me.

Groupon

Senior Director

January 1970

My feelings are mixed. I had a wonderful team and an incredibly supportive manager and whip-smart peers. However, about a year ago that all changed. Senior leadership turnover, competent & creative peer departures. What was left was a senior leadership boys network, hostile environment and simply put, confusion. Very few senior women left. Sad.

SAP

Senior Director

Manager dependent. Nice company culture. Quarterly driven: you are either selling or developing. You can create a nice work-life balance for yourself - especially if you are virtual. If you are virtual, it seems harder to progress your career. It is hard to understand what it takes to succeed, get promoted, etc.

SAP

Senior Director, Marketing

Very white male-dominated, very rigid work style, makes symbolic appointments of women for good optics. Women who have any power don't last long. Highly bureaucratic, layered, slow. Not open to feedback, just pushes superficial messages of diversity, like hiring more people with Autism, while ignoring the real day to day issues with other populations.
