TJX Companies, Inc is the leading off-price retailer for apparel and home decor with a mission to deliver great value to customers every day. This global company strives to be a place where Associates feel welcome as soon as they walk in the door. TJX offers great opportunities, an incredible culture and a sense of excitement for the future.

TJX has long considered inclusion and diversity to be key parts of who they are as a company, and they are strongly committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. As a large, complex and global business, TJX knows the importance of having a workforce that reflects the diversity of both the customers and communities that they serve. Further, by fostering a culture of inclusion, they are empowering and engaging their Associates, inspiring them to work hard, challenge themselves and be innovative in their thinking.

The bottom line is that, at TJX, they know that their Associates bring their business to life. And, as a result, they aim to always support their Associates and to continuously make TJX a fantastic place to work.

To this end, TJX does not tolerate discrimination, harassment or hate of any kind and are actively committed to supporting equity and racial justice.

These goals and business practices align with TJX’s core values of honesty, integrity and treating others with dignity and respect. Developing talent and championing their culture are yearly global business priorities for the company. As a result, TJX scored a 90 on the Corporate Equality Index of the U.S.-based Human Rights Campaign, and Forbes even listed TJX among America’s “Best Employers for Diversity” and “Best Employers for Women.” Further, due to their efforts, 79% of promotions globally were earned by women, on average, over the past three years. Plus, 67% of people in managerial positions globally are women.

In this article, we’ll share more about this award-winning culture, their diversity initiatives and how they support their Associates every day.

How TJX Companies, Inc prioritizes diversity, Associate happiness and career development.

As part of their commitment to diversity, TJX makes sure that they are promoting DE&I throughout the Associate journey.

A few ways that TJX works to attract more diverse candidates is by working with universities, attending conferences, leveraging social media for outreach and collaborating with community-based business networks. For example, in the U.S., the company partners with organizations that work with colleges and universities to provide specialty development for members of diverse groups on their campuses. And, to get a better understanding of their progress and how they can reach more diverse audiences, TJX benchmarks against their peers.

Raising awareness of unconscious bias is woven throughout TJX’s U.S. operations, through onboarding, store communications, learning tools, processes and more. In addition to providing all new hires and new managers in their field organization with unconscious bias training and refreshing it periodically, TJX also keeps the dialogue top of mind through ongoing conversations.

For example, they have provided talking points and scenarios for Store Managers to use during Associate shift huddles. In the U.S., Store Managers also have a tool called “Culture Pulse” available to them. Culture Pulse helps store teams to gauge performance in the areas of customer engagement and in their connections with each other, and it is used to help determine where additional engagement with Associates might be needed.

In the U.S., TJX has formal groups established to support Associate engagement around inclusion and diversity. These Associate Resource Groups offer networking, development and support and are available to Associates in their corporate offices, loss prevention departments and select distribution centers. In 2020, these Groups featured online events focused around mental health, women’s leadership sessions and multicultural music gatherings. TJX has also created two new Associate Resource Groups, the Working Parents Group and BLAC @ TJX (Black Leadership and Associate Coalition).
