August 26, 2020 — celebrated as Women’s Equality Day — is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote.
Landmark signs of progress like the 19th Amendment are something to be celebrated. But as we’ve been reminded over the last few months by the timely and poignant Black Lives Matter movement, there’s still much work to be done.
Although inequality remains in every sphere of our society, Fairygodboss was started in 2015 to improve the workplace through increased transparency. Right now, women of color make up 50% of the low-wage workforce. And at the current rate, Black women will have to wait until 2119 for equal pay, while Latina women will have to wait until 2224. That kind of disparity is simply not OK.
We believe transparency about the inequalities we face in the workplace helps us to tackle them head on. As we’ve seen at demonstrations across the country, coming together and sharing stories is key to sparking social change. Only when discrimination — whether rooted in racism, sexism, homophobia or another form of hate — has been identified, named and brought to broader attention can it be confronted.
We’d like you to take part in this important step of tearing down workplace inequality with us. Here’s how.
These examples may tell a story about microaggressions, offensive language, pay gaps, lack of upward mobility or differences in job security you’ve experienced as the result of your gender, race, sexuality or other identifier.
Please submit your response* in one of two ways by end of day on 8/14:
In 30 seconds or less, tell us about a time you experienced inequality by capturing a video of yourself on your cell phone.
Horizontal video is preferred, but please allow enough room to be cropped vertically, if need be.
Please make sure there are no big brands in the background or on your clothing.
Before sending, please double check your audio to make sure there are no interruptions.
