Many companies now realize that employees are most productive when they are able to “bring their whole selves to work.” Yet many in the LGBTQ2IA community still fear that bringing their whole selves to work may lead to discrimination.
As companies look to diversify and create cultures of inclusive, LGBTQ-friendly environments, talent attraction messaging, and benefits are a must. That’s why we’re especially excited to provide several resources that can help leaders, managers, and co-workers understand and support their LGBTQ employees.
LGBTQ Activist and Lead Diversity Advisor at Fairygodboss, Nicole Krakoff (she/her), says that, “as a queer employee, it is important to understand that your trans and queer employees, especially queer people of color, are part of a disenfranchised community.” With that understanding, we must take steps to level the playing field.
“Action items that can support queer employees include hiring and promoting queer people, providing opportunities for advancement, and retaining queer people by providing inclusive benefits as well as hosting training sessions facilitated by queer owned and operated DEIB organizations,” Krakoff says.
For individuals and allies, Krakoff requests, “please educate yourself, listen and learn, use inclusive language and pronouns, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.” She adds that it’s important to “center your impact on others over your intentions.”
In an effort to help companies diversify and create cultures of inclusion, here are 15 resources to help you understand and support LGBTQ2IA colleagues at work.
