As the co-founder of two women-owned and operated companies, I always knew that I wanted to find a way to help other women succeed in business.

Over the years, I’ve been an “unofficial” mentor to many entrepreneurs, but that all changed with a single email and one very persuasive phone call from The Mama Ladder. The Mama Ladder’s commitment to helping women around the world thrive at the intersection of mamahood and entrepreneurship had me at "hello"! My company, Belly Bandit, now co-hosts the semi-annual $5,000 “High Five” business grant. The grant empowers mom entrepreneurs to make a massive impact. But in truth, the impact on me has been even greater. Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. Moms know how to multitask.

Yes, moms can juggle a lot, but when you add running a business to their plate, you really see their skills in action. Raising kids and starting a business are both labors of love and learn-as-you-go endeavors. Doing both at the same time (and still enjoying your life along the way) really is possible… and yes, exhausting.

2. #WomenSupportingWomen isn't just a hashtag!

When we change the focus from competition to collaboration we’re more successful, we feel better and we actually have fun! Motherhood is a marathon and having a supportive community behind you makes all the difference

3. Mentors matter.

The fastest way to get where you want to go is to learn from someone who is a few steps ahead. The mentorship opportunities offered by the High Five Grant help women take powerful steps towards their business dreams

4. Mom entrepreneurs can benefit by paying it forward.

I relied on the guidance of family and friends when starting my businesses. However, it wasn’t until I began working with the Mama Ladder that I realized that by sharing my business missteps I could help other women avoid common pitfalls!

5. Through a grant like this, everyone wins.

This has been the biggest lesson. The women who apply for the High Five Grant are all winners because they are focusing on their goals and formulating the WHY behind their business. But, I’ve also won… because these incredible women motivate me, inspire me and push me to be a better mom, business owner and woman. This grant allows women to share their ideas with the world and allows me to give them all a high five!
