Nation Magazine and the News Guild of New York reached a groundbreaking deal on parental leave yesterday. The union and The Nation reached an agreement that effective January 1, new parents of either gender (including adoptive parents) would receive 16 weeks of paid leave to care for their new child. In a world where these types of leave policies are typically reserved for high-flying technology companies, we applaud the publisher for being a leader on this important family issue. Will other employers follow suit? This may increase the pressure on other newsrooms to increase their benefits.
Today, PayPal also announced it was expanding it's parental leave to 16 fully paid weeks of maternity leave for birth mothers as well as 8 weeks of paid bonding time for fathers, same-sex couples and domestic partners for employees in the United States. We've updated our maternity leave database, accordingly!
