Anne Hathaway is Staying Sober Until Her Son is 18 — and Working Moms Will Understand Why
Drinking habits are hyper-personal, so Anne Hathaway's transparency about her decision not to drink until her 3-year-old son turns 18 has garnered quite a bit of attention.
The actress first announced her sobriety back in January on a segment with Ellen Degeneres. But she just explained her reasoning further in Boston Common magazine.
It turns out that she realized juggling work, a toddler, and a hangover just isn't possible for her.
"The way I drink leads me to have hangovers and those were the problem," she told Boston Common. "My last hangover lasted for five days. When I’m at a stage in my life where there is enough space for me to have a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but that won’t be until my kid is out of the house."
However, she also made it clear that she doesn't shame moms who need a glass of wine after a long day.
"I just want to make this clear: Most people don’t have to do such an extreme thing," she said. "I don’t think drinking is bad. It’s just the way I do it—which I personally think is really fun and awesome—is just not the kind of fun and awesome that goes with having a child for me. But this isn’t a moralistic stance."
Whether you enjoy your happy hours, haven't had a beer in 20 years or fall somewhere in between, you have to admit that Hathaway's honesty is something special. And, I mean, can we really blame her for not wanting to hit red carpet events with a toddler-mom quality of sleep and a hangover? I'd need about five years and a million hours of beauty sleep to prepare for something like that, and it seems like she's doing one every weekend.
I'd say she's a superhero, but like every working woman who seems to "have it all," she's just human. And that's what makes her transparency (and understanding for people who think differently than her) so admirable.
