PwC recently reported that 68% of business leaders believe their organizations are committed to serving “all citizens” and not just “a small group of stakeholders.” Even more, 63% said that their company has a purpose beyond making money. But, are these beliefs widely held?

While business leaders believe their organizations have a greater purpose and serve the community at large, those beliefs aren’t translating outside the organization. The same PwC study reports that just 15% of the wider public believes organizations serve “all citizens” - and it’s pretty easy to see why.

Last year as organizations made diversity pledges and commitments, women still lost more jobs, were paid less, and continued to struggle with stress and burnout with little relief. More specifically, of the 9.6 million jobs lost in 2020, 55% were women’s jobs. And even as recently as last year, women still made only 81 cents per every dollar men made. The numbers look grimmer for Women of Color.

On a mission to elevate women at work, Fairygodboss launched research to understand how women and men search for and evaluate jobs. Focusing on job seekers, the results showed clear and distinct differences in job seeking behaviors. For example, women are more likely to consider gender diversity (45%) and racial diversity (41%) as a strong factor in evaluating an organization, compared to men (31% and 33%, respectively). In addition, although many consider flexible and remote work options as a woman’s benefit, the research showed that flexible work is the #2 consideration - behind compensation - for both women and men. Even more, while men were most likely to successfully find a job from a personal contact, Indeed, or LinkedIn, LinkedIn wasn’t even in the top 3 resources for women.

After better understanding job seeker behavior, we’re now turning the tables. That said, we’re proud to launch our first annual 2021 Diversity Hiring Survey, which will take a look at measures talent acquisition, employer branding, and diversity & inclusion professionals are taking to attract and hire underrepresented talent. While maintaining anonymity, the survey asks about organizational hiring processes, goals, partnerships, data collection, and more. With this information, we will benchmark what organizations are doing to achieve diversity hiring - breaking down key steps throughout the hiring process - and we’ll share key findings in a comprehensive report.

That said, we cannot do this research alone. In order to understand what organizations are doing, we need YOUR help. If you’re a Talent; Employer Branding; Recruitment Marketing; or Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging (DEIB) professional, please spend 5-minutes completing the survey and share with your peers. Once finalized, we’ll provide the complete report to all participants. Even more, for each completed survey, Fairygodboss will donate to $5 Dress for Success, which helps promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women.

Beyond the research report, we understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to hiring doesn’t work. What’s more, we understand that even with the best of efforts, hiring decisions ultimately aren’t being made by talent or diversity professionals - they are made by hiring managers. To walk through key research findings as well as actionable insights you can use to partner with hiring managers to reduce bias, make fairer hiring decisions, and ultimately achieve diversity hiring goals, we’re teaming up with diversity hiring expert, Jennifer Tardy, for a webinar on What You Need to Know About Diversity Hiring in 2021. Register and join us on February 10th at 1:30pm EST for this can’t-miss event.

In summary, as organizations look to diversify and create cultures of inclusion, it's clear that a one size doesn’t fit all in talent acquisition. Rest assured with the proper information, strategies, and tactics, you’ll be able to not just build a diversity hiring program, but build diversity into your hiring process.
