In May, the Facebook company announced it was ringing in the future of work: remote employees.

In a weekly company town hall, hosted on Facebook Live, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company will allow many of its employees to permanently work remotely. Looking to the future, as many as half of the company’s employees will work remotely within the next decade, according to Zuckerberg.

“We are going to be the most forward-leaning company on remote work at our scale, and we’re going to do this over time in a way that is measured, thoughtful and responsible,” Zuckerberg said.

This announcement positioned Facebook as one of the first major tech companies to make the change. And while employees could certainly benefit from the flexibility as we readjust to life in the COVID era — a recent study says 54 percent of Americans want to continue working from home — it is sure to make a lasting impact, too. Remote work allows for greater work-life balance, cuts down on commutes, provides employment & economic opportunities to people in diverse communities and lets introverts shine in the comfort of their own spaces. For these reasons, it’s a powerful tool for inclusion, a value of Facebook’s team that's only become more important as the workforce struggles with COVID-19.

“It’s clear that COVID-19 has changed a lot about our lives, and that certainly includes the way that most of us work,” Zuckerberg said. “Coming out of this period, I expect that remote work is going to be a growing trend as well.”

Facebook has been designing a remote work experience that allows for collaboration, growth and equal opportunities to make an impact without missing out on flexibility. Facebook Resource Groups, which operate remotely, bring together inclusive groups to provide professional development and community support. The company also offers a series of remote learning resources and training that help employees develop skills at their own pace. When it comes to day-to-day work, the company offers fully remote tech support, tools that help managers build the effectiveness of their teams and tools like Workplace and Portal.

The company says it is still working out some of the details of the future of remote work, and they will be continuing to expand the types of roles eligible for remote arrangements. Those who are interested can apply for remote roles on Facebook’s Careers website, or share their interest in remote work during the application process for other roles not yet eligible.
