Founder and CEO,  Jessica Thiefels Consulting
Tell us a little about your career. How did you get where you are now?

I had six jobs in eight years but I wasn't bouncing around for the fun of it. Each move I made was getting me further in my career — from copywriter to copyeditor, associate editor to director, and director to VP. I now run my own business using all of the many skills I learned in my various roles.

What's an accomplishment that you are proud of?

I just got an endorsement for my book from Marie Forleo! Running my business while traveling the world AND writing a book was also a major bucket list experience for me :)

What's a challenge that you've faced and overcome?

Being in a job I hate — and forcing myself to find something of value in the position while I looked for something else. Looking back, even the worst jobs taught me specific skills that I use every single day in my marketing agency.

What's the No. 1 career tip that you'd like to share with other women?

You are in charge. You get to decide what you want to do or where you want to work — you just need to leverage that power, which may require goal-setting, accountability, mindset work and clarity on who you are (not who people tell you you are).

Why do you love where you work?

I am my own boss! And that I get to choose to do the work that I love.

What do you do when you're not working?

I love being outside, especially near the water. I read, watch T.V. and love sitting in silence and just being alone with myself. So much creativity and inspiration comes through when you give yourself space to simply be.

If you could have dinner with one famous person — dead or alive — who would it be?

Brene Brown!

What's your karaoke song?

Oh boy... I do not do karaoke, ever. Probably a Taylor Swift song!

What's your favorite movie?

I love 90s and early 00s romcoms... High on my list are "Love and Basketball," "Love Actually" and "Brown Sugar."

What book would you bring with you on a deserted island?

I could read "Eat, Pray, Love" a dozen more times — but probably something by Brene Brown or perhaps Rupi Kaur.

What's your go-to self care activity?

Getting my nails done or watching a classic romcom.
