Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Rubaiyat Hossain, a Senior Software Engineer at Siemens Digital Industries Software.

Ever since joining Siemens Digital Industries Software in 2011 as an intern software engineer, Hossain has been able to constantly grow at the company. Not only has she been promoted multiple times (including being hired as a full-time employee within a year of starting at the company), she’s also been able to work in two different states, with four different teams, and on many exciting technologies and projects. “It's been an amazing ride, and I'm loving it,” Hossain tells us!

Throughout it all, Hossain’s favorite aspect of the company has been the chance to experience such an inclusive and diverse culture. “My teammates come from all different kinds of backgrounds and nationalities, and they speak different languages and have different ways of thinking,” she shares. “I really like that when I look around and see my team members representing all ways of thinking, I feel very comfortable being myself and expressing myself and my ideas.”

In the video below, Hossain shares more about why she loves working at Siemens Digital Industries Software. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.

What’s a project you're working on that you find exciting?

My team and I are working on building a metamodeling service for cloud-based applications. Metamodeling is a way of describing or storing data models, which are objects or entities in an organization that you want to track data about (such as customers, products, or people).

I'm really excited about this project because it is very different from any other project that I've worked on so far, and there are a lot of learning opportunities for me. We are at a very early stage of the project, so that means we are still defining the architectural details for this project. This is a very important and exciting part of software development.

How would you describe the culture at Siemens Digital Industries Software?

I would use three words to describe the culture at Siemens Digital industry Software:

  1. Innovation. I belong to an innovation and research group. In my group, we create idea challenges and then we deep dive into finding the most innovative solutions. Everyone in my team is involved in brainstorming and then presenting creative solutions and ideas. Siemens Digital industry Software encourages all of us to be creative and to share ideas openly.

  2. Inclusion. All the teams at Siemens Digital industry Software are made of people from diverse backgrounds and different ways of thinking.

  3. Fun. We are often working on a lot of different challenging projects, but we all help each other out. So work is never stressful — it's fun for us.

How does Siemens Digital Industries Software support you?

Siemens Digital Industries Software has a lot of benefits for employees, and especially for working moms. The benefit that I most enjoy is our unlimited PTO. I can schedule my holidays around my child's school schedule, so I don't have to save up a lot of days until the end of the year to be able to spend time with my family.

Another thing I really enjoy is that Siemens Digital Industries Software provides a lot of different in-person and online learning courses to advance our careers. We also have different mentorship programs. I currently belong to a women's mentorship program where we meet once a month to talk about career-related topics. This has been really helpful to me in terms of defining my career goals and reaching them.

What advice do you have for other women looking to work at Siemens Digital Industries Software?

  1. Go for it. Siemens Digital Industries Software is an amazing company to work for; we have so many different kinds of projects that are being developed simultaneously, so you'll never be bored.

  2. Have a growth mindset. It is very important to understand that intelligence is a learnable skill. And, when you think that in these terms, it's very easy to come back from any failure or setbacks. Having a growth mindset also contributes to having good mental health because growth-minded people are often very positive minded.
