‘I Love My Job’: ‘I’m Working at My Dream Company at the Intersection of Healthcare and Engineering’

Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Annam Quraishi, a Post Market Surveillance (PMS) Engineer at Intuitive, where she’s grown her career for over three years.

For Quraishi, not only does she love her role — working at Intuitive is also her dream. “Intuitive has been a dream company for me ever since I was a little kid,” Quraishi says. “I grew up five minutes away from the Sunnyvale headquarters, and they used to host open houses where anyone could come in and test drive the da Vinci and hop on the robot to do some exercises. Ever since then, I knew that one day I was going to work here. Fast forward to after college, and I'm working at my dream company at the intersection of health and engineering.”

Talk to us about what you find most exciting about the work you do.

As part of my job, I monitor and analyze the data that we get from real customers who use our da Vinci robotic systems all over the world. The exciting part is being able to find opportunities and areas of improvement for our products and to potentially enhance our designs, make them more robust, and expand on our innovation.

I also love working with different teams on a daily basis. I'm always mesmerized to learn the ins and outs of the clinical realm, risk, and regulatory in cross-functional settings. The people here are very knowledgeable in their domain. And, as someone who loves to learn, I'm always learning from others here.

How would you describe the culture of Intuitive?

Diverse, innovative, intentional, and mission-driven. We really are a diverse set of people with diverse backgrounds who offer their support to work toward a common goal. We’re innovative, sincere, and really encouraged here to think outside of the box to enhance our continuous improvement. And we’re intentional because everything you do here has a purpose — it allows everyone here to be really mission-driven in their work.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Intuitive?

My favorite thing about Intuitive is how mission-driven and passionate each and every person I work with here is. I've never seen employees who are more aligned with the mission… This makes our jobs here so much easier and fun because we’re working toward a fulfilling mission and common goal. We truly believe that minimally invasive care is life-enhancing care, and hearing stories from patients and surgeons on the procedures really fuels our drive. It's great to be working for a company that's super mission driven.

How do you feel supported by Intuitive?

The leaders at the company are really here to support me in my wellbeing as well as my career growth at the company.

Resources such as development classes are shared regularly with every single employee here. Using these, I have built up my interpersonal skills. I've learned more technical skills and taken project management classes and methodology classes.

The benefit package here is really great as well. For example, the Lyra mental health app enables all employees to receive counseling services throughout the year.

What advice would you give to other women looking to work at Intuitive?

Reach out to other women who already work at the company to learn more about any role that you might be interested in.

LinkedIn is a great place to start with that. We have women here working in both the technical fields as well as the non-technical fields. They have been great mentors, as well. We also have an employee resource group for women. This allows me to feel a sense of belonging, and hopefully you might be able to, too.
