Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from real women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Niloofar Sanaei, PhD and Engineering Specialist in Digital Design and Qualification at Eaton — a power management company dedicated to improving people’s lives and the environment through technologies that are reliable, efficient, safe and sustainable.
Eaton is an exciting place to work. Niloofar herself has been collaborating with the company since she was in grad school as a PhD student. At the time, she thought of Eaton as a more traditional manufacturing company; however, after she joined, Niloofar found out that Eaton was so much more.
Eaton is currently going through a digital transformation and using new technology to increase efficiency and make more space for creativity — a goal that Niloofar is even leading a project on herself. “I think it's a really good time to join this team if you're interested in being a part of this digital transformation,” she says. If you’re interested in working on state-of-the-art technology and helping partners “bring the new digital technologies that are out there to our unconventional way of manufacturing and designing,” then Eaton is the company for you!
In the video below, Niloofar shares more why she loves working at Eaton. We also share lightly edited highlights from this video discussion in the following article.
My favorite thing is to challenge myself to solve problems analytically and creatively. While this applies everywhere, generally, in engineering, this is much more pronounced. I [also] have a curious personality and having my educational background and getting a PhD in the engineering field helps me to be independent and thoughtful — I learned how to effectively start from a concept or an idea on my own and then go all the way to the execution.
The people that I work with are really friendly, approachable and they're courteous. And the type of projects that I work on are really important — they are intellectually stimulating, which I enjoy a lot. And then, the autonomy that I have in my role challenges me and also encourages me to be more creative. I also enjoy how it really puts me in a situation where I need to develop my leadership qualities.
We are ethical, passionate, accountable, efficient, transparent and we learn. Being here for more than two years now, I really understand how each of these attributes is applied in our work. They really help to create a healthy work environment that keeps you feeling valued and helps you develop your skills while you produce high-quality work.
The most important thing that Eaton does to support women in technology is to actually recognize and increase awareness around the biases that can cause barriers to the advancement of women. I really appreciate that, and the fact that we talk about this inequality, which exists anywhere.
We shouldn’t be content or think that we should not have any role in addressing that. The culture here at Eaton advertises and promotes that we all have shared responsibilities to help address unconscious biases and lack of representation.
Know yourself and your strength and be confident. If there is an opportunity that is aligned with your goals, values and expertise, definitely go for it. Apply for it, and reach out to people. Also, Eaton is a really good place to work; the culture that we have here believes in inclusion, supports you in your development and invests in your future.
