The ‘care economy’ is a $648 billion opportunity, Melinda French Gates’ Pivotal Ventures found

BY EMMA HINCHLIFFE July 14, 2021

How much does caregiving—from childcare to caring for elders—contribute to the U.S. economy? According to a new report from Melinda French Gates’ Pivotal Ventures, it’s $648 billion.

That gigantic number is bigger than the U.S. pharmaceutical industry ($510 billion) and “larger than the U.S. hotel, car manufacturing, and social networking industries combined,” says the report.

Are you hiring a director of remote work? Here’s why Facebook did

By: Jen Colletta | July 8, 2021

Just two months into the pandemic, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the company an early adopter of long-term remote work—pledging to allow employees to work from home through summer 2021 and predicting that, within five to 10 years, about half of its workforce could be working remotely. That forecast became more solidified, and expansive, over the following year, with the company ultimately announcing last month that nearly all employees would have the option to request permanent remote status.

To make that a reality, the tech giant has invested significant back-end work to formalize its approach to remote work—from new policies to tech adaptations. And, in charge of it all, a new position: Director of Remote.

Coping With Talent Shortages for On-Location Roles

By Devin Partida July 5, 2021

As healthcare workers administer more vaccines, many companies are pushing employees to return to in-person work. However, not everyone wants to go back to hour-long commutes and drab little cubicles. In fact, some people would rather quit their jobs than give up remote work. And thousands of Americans are doing just that.

While their decision to work from home (or not work at all) may improve their well-being and work-life balance, it’s caused severe talent shortages in on-location roles across the country. Subsequently, countless businesses are struggling to fill their offices and retain skilled employees.

Women are still struggling to reach pre-pandemic employment

BY CLAIRE EWING-NELSON & JASMINE TUCKER JULY 2021

The most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) monthly jobs report shows that the economy gained 850,000 jobs in June 2021, compared to 583,000 jobs gained in May 2021. Women accounted for 47.6% of job gains last month, gaining 405,000 jobs while men gained 445,000. Nevertheless, women will need more than 9 straight months of job gains at last month’s level to recover the nearly 3.8 million net jobs they have lost since February 2020.

Last month, 148,000 women and 232,000 men ages 20 and over returned to the labor force, meaning they are now working or looking for work. Nearly all of the women (97%) who returned to the labor force last month are unemployed and looking for work, while only 3% of women who re-entered the labor force are employed. By comparison, only 12% of men who reentered the labor force are unemployed, while 88% are working. These labor force re-entrants bring women’s labor force participation to 57.5% in June 2021, up from 57.4% in May 2021. This remains well below their pre-pandemic labor force participation rate of 59.2% in February 2020. Before the pandemic started, women’s labor force participation rate had not been as low as 57.5% since June 1989.3
