You are not your thoughts, but your thoughts can influence the kinds of experiences you’ll have. It’s the whole Law of Attraction theory: The more positive your thoughts, the more positive experiences you will have.

Think about it: If you have a job interview coming up and spend night after night worrying that you won't get the job because you’re under-qualified, have a resume gap, or weren’t referred for it, your interview performance will probably suffer. However, if you imagine scenarios where you answer questions confidently, you can bring that energy into the actual interview—and nail it.

So, how do you raise your vibration to attract the most positive outcomes? You can start with positive affirmations. Positive affirmations are simply positive phrases or statements that you can use to change your beliefs about yourself, says Janelle Cepero, a meditation teacher and spiritual coach based in Miami. “Using positive affirmations daily can help you boost confidence, reach your goals, and have a more positive self-image,” she says. “If you want to change your outer experiences, you have to start with your inner dialogue.”

How to choose the right affirmations

Cepero says you can choose the right positive affirmations by taking the following steps:

  1. Get crystal clear on your goals. “Think about the qualities that someone who’s reached your goals would possess. Would they be kind to themselves? Would they have unshakable faith? Are they at peace within? Do they have a healthy work-life balance? Use those qualities to create positive affirmations you need in order to reach your goals.”

  2. Keep it realistic. “You want to feel like there is some truth behind your affirmations, even if it’s just a little. If repeating ‘I am worthy’ doesn’t feel true for you, try ‘I am learning what it means to feel worthy.’ The more you repeat the latter, the more the former starts to feel true, until one day you will genuinely believe it. Cepero reminds us that “changing those deeply rooted subconscious stories takes time. Be kind and patient with yourself throughout the journey.”

  3. Say the things you needed to hear as a child, but didn’t. “Sometimes, most times, that’s all we need. Examples: ‘I am proud of you,’ ‘You are beautiful,’ and ‘You are loved for who you are in this moment.’ Speak to yourself the way you would encourage a child, and give yourself the grace, kindness, and patience you deserve.”

How to manifest with positive affirmations

When it comes to positive affirmations, you may need to believe it to see it. But don’t be discouraged by the time it takes to transform your reality. Cepero has some helpful tips for manifesting with your affirmations:

  • Recite them first thing in the morning or as you’re falling asleep. “This is when your brain is in theta, the brainwave frequency associated with subconscious reprogramming. At this state your brain is essentially a sponge, ready to soak up all those positive affirmations.”

  • Back them up with action. “Affirm you are at peace in those moments you are actually at peace. This is how your brain changes—when you backup the affirmation with a matching experience. And then in those moments when you’re feeling stressed out, the feeling of peace will be more available.”

  • Visualize the outcome. “For those moments we can’t always back up the affirmation with the experience, visualize the outcome you wish to experience. And sprinkle in those affirmations during the visualization.”

  • Write them down. “There is power in the written word.”

Bottom line, says Cepero: “Think of positive affirmations as little daily reminders that you are worthy, strong, healthy, successful, calm, loved, and all the good things.”
