Recent studies are showing the impact the coronavirus pandemic has changed our relationship with work -- more specifically, how much we are working. In a recent study by Fairygodboss, nearly half our community said they were working more, and Wall Street Journal showed that Americans worked an extra 22 million hours each day. 

The demands of work and home life have become so much that according to the recent Women in the Workplace study by McKinsey and LeanIn, 1 in 4 women are still considering leaving or downshifting their careers. And it’s even worse for Women of Color. Our own research found that 1 in 3 women of color plan to leave their jobs within the next year. We’ve reached a breaking point and unfortunately things don’t look like they’re turning around, or at least not fast enough. 

One of the leading causes is burn out. Studies show that women and especially senior women have felt pressured to work more over the past few months and it’s left so many of us exhausted. Recent reports show as many as 71% of Americans are suffering from burnout. And, in a survey we, over half of respondents said they were considering leaving their jobs because they felt so burnt out.  

Fairygodboss was created to empower women to help one another find success throughout our careers and every day. That support is especially needed at a time when women have exited the workforce in unprecedented numbers, returning us to 1980s levels of workforce participation. That’s why we convened the first ever Fairygodboss Inspiration Summit on April 13, 2021. At the event, leading thinkers and C-Level executives shared insights and support with thousands of members from our community. The objective for the day was to create a safe and supportive space to confront our collective burnout, be vulnerable and help lift each other up.
