Sage-Gavin: HR, now is the time to take action on inclusion

By Eva Sage-Gavin June 16, 2021

June lands almost at the midpoint of a calendar year and offers an opportunity to pause and reflect. It’s such an important month when we celebrate Pride—honoring the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 1969—and Juneteenth—commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. in 1865.

This year, these events take place a year after George Floyd’s death and coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Orlando Pulse nightclub mass shooting and the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Addressing Scarcity by Empowering Recruiters

By AMY OVIEDO JUNE 21, 2021

I often think of scarcity in terms of goods available. If you live in Indianapolis and you need a new swimsuit in September…best wishes. However, if you need one in March, no worries; Spring Break prep is in full swing and you’ll have plenty of options. You could shop online at any time of year and have plenty of choices. While you’re at Target or Macy’s in September, though, you’ll likely encounter an extreme scarcity of options..

This is true in recruiting, too. If you’re sourcing for an audio engineer in New Orleans, you’ll have a plethora of talent readily available. That same requirement in Vail, Colo., may feel much more scarce. It is then the role of the recruiter to work with the hiring team to determine the best when, where, what, and how to ensure a successful search that doesn’t consistently lead to a desert of talent.

BY S. MITRA KALITA June 16, 2021

Some of you are new to this whole workplace diversity thing. And it shows.

Over the last year, managers doubled down on their commitment to more inclusive hiring. One survey finds that more than three-quarters of workers feel diversity is a priority in their organizations. Data from LinkedIn shows the number of people with the title "head of diversity" jumped 104% from 2015 to 2020. The number of people with the "chief diversity officer" title increased 68%.

But one role cannot lead the revolution alone or solve such an entrenched problem. Here are five recurring mistakes to avoid in hiring, communication and strategy around diversity, equity and inclusion.
