“Transitioning from a military career to a civilian job can be challenging,” says Rosa M. Alvarez, the Senior Analyst in Manufacturing at Altria. “However, with the right approach, you can successfully navigate this change and thrive in your new career.”
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Alvarez served 21 years in the Army as an Aviation Maintenance Warrant Officer, Aviation Maintenance Officer, and Armament Officer for Kiowa Helicopter. Throughout her military career, she acquired essential skills that have continued to benefit her after retiring and transitioning to the civilian sector.
“We’re trained to lead and collaborate effectively in diverse and challenging environments in the military,” Alvarez says. “Clear communication, accountability, and collaboration are crucial for leading teams.”
Alvarez also emphasizes that the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and solve complex challenges applies to the civilian workplace. “We have extensive experience managing high-pressure situations and demonstrating resilience in adversity. This adaptability and resilience are invaluable for navigating the dynamic and fast-paced business world.”
Here, we caught up with Alvarez to learn more about her work at Altria and her best advice for fellow veterans transitioning to civilian life.
I’m an indirect material analyst while managing the Hauni Original Equipment Manufacturer account. My responsibilities include preparing the purchasing card report, managing the budget, handling supersessions, and addressing other tasks as needed.
Additionally, I participate in meetings and Engagement Research Groups. I’m involved in the Integrated Work System Pillar, focusing on the organizational aspect. Each of these areas comes with responsibilities that demand attention to detail and are often time-consuming, such as analyzing transactions, ordering parts, verifying orders, contacting suppliers, and responding to email inquiries for information requested by planners and the respective manufacturing bays.
I trained for four months before transitioning to Altria. Training included various rotations, such as packing and learning how to make cigarettes, which provided a crucial understanding of the process. I worked as a maintenance supervisor for three years before moving into my current position.
While we can learn typical corporate vocabulary, we don’t acquire it in the military. Fortunately, I have a fantastic boss who guides me through these learning moments and supports my growth. Thanks to her, I’m still here today.

Individuals with a military background have skills and qualities that can be highly valuable in the civilian workplace.
Military training equips us to analyze complex situations, make sound judgments, and take decisive action. It builds critical- thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, which can be leveraged in various civilian roles.
The military instills a strong sense of discipline and a commitment to excellence, translating into dedication, attention to detail, and a drive for continuous improvement in the civilian workplace. These qualities contribute to personal and professional success and positively influence team dynamics.
In addition, clear and effective communication is crucial in the military and highly transferable to the civilian workplace. We learn to communicate concisely, listen actively, and provide constructive feedback, which enhances team collaboration and productivity.
The military also fosters a diverse and inclusive environment, teaching personnel to appreciate and respect different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. This understanding of diversity and inclusion can be applied to leading diverse teams at Altria.
My top advice in your job search is to take full advantage of the available resources and support for veterans.
Research veteran-friendly employers; look for companies and organizations with a strong track record of actively supporting and hiring veterans.
Translate your military experience into civilian terms. Many civilian employers might not understand military jargon or fully appreciate your skills and accomplishments. Focus on highlighting transferable skills relevant to the potential role. Emphasize your leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability skills. Call out your specialized training or certifications.
Connect with veterans who have successfully transitioned into civilian careers. They can provide valuable insights and advice.
Utilize veteran support organizations. These groups provide career counseling, resume assistance, interview preparation, and job placement services specifically designed for veterans.
Highlight your unique perspectives; as a woman veteran, you bring a distinct perspective and set of experiences that can be advantageous.
Consider enrolling in additional educational programs or obtaining certifications to enhance your skills and marketability in the civilian job market. Identify gaps in your knowledge or skills and proactively address them.
I consistently give my best in my job because it’s my responsibility and a source of personal fulfillment. Logistics is my passion, and I thrive in my daily responsibilities. Thanks to Altria, I’ve significantly advanced my professional skills, gaining valuable knowledge and experience in the civilian world, and I’m continuously expanding my expertise. With these skills, I empower my team to meet deadlines and cultivate a strong, positive reputation, establishing our credibility in supply chain management.
