Senior Principal Software Engineer - Platform Engineering

Our Platform Engineering Organisation is the backbone of Atlassian's connected product ecosystem. Our teams are responsible for building the horizontal platform and shared capabilities that unify our products into one scalable, AI-ready teamwork platform. We power Atlassian's AI strategy through the Teamwork Graph and data intelligence layer, deliver seamless cross-product experiences, and ensure a consistent, enterprise-grade user experience at massive scale.

As a Senior Principal Engineer, you'll help solve some of the toughest challenges in Enterprise SaaS -think scale, reliability, data, and ecosystem growth. You'll work on Atlassian-wide experiences (global navigation, notifications, search, messaging, teamwork graph), shaping the architecture and data backbone that connects our products and enables thousands of partners to thrive in our ecosystem.

What you'll do

• Own and drive the technical vision for platform-wide capabilities, unifying Atlassian's products into a seamless, AI-powered system.

• Architect and deliver solutions to complex, cross-company engineering challenges, raising the technical and operational bar.

• Improve productivity and operational excellence by driving automation and best practices at scale.

• Set clear technical direction and make high-impact architectural decisions for the future of Atlassian's platform.

• Collaborate with leaders across product, design, and engineering to align strategy and deliver cohesive customer experiences.

• Guide and influence principal engineers and architects, ensuring alignment and success on large, multi-team initiatives.

• Mentor and develop engineers at all levels, building a strong pipeline of future technical leaders.

• Champion a culture of engineering excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement across Atlassian.

Your background

• Minimum of 15 years of hands-on experience in software/technology roles, in Enterprise Products & Solutions in the cloud.

• Proficiency with cloud-native technologies, ideally AWS.

• At least 6 years of experience architecting and implementing multiple features of a SaaS product at a high scale, performance and reliability of at least 4 nines.

• Experience with building and delivering multi-tenant cloud-native SaaS software.

• Strong understanding of distributed systems, modern cloud-native architectures, and distributed data management.

• Experience communicating updates and resolutions to senior and executive level stakeholders and other partners to drive the mission forward.

• Passion for maintaining high-quality standards in software development.

• Success in articulating and pitching a technical vision to stakeholders.

• Ability to balance short- and long-term objectives, focusing on both technical and business outcomes.
