Key Responsibilities
Expertly manage docking operations, secure lines, inspect and maintain barges and rigging to ensure safe and efficient tows.
Champion workplace safety for yourself and your team, following all company and USCG/MSHA guidelines.
Wear proper PPE and understand emergency procedures for all designated areas, ensuring a safe working environment.
Take directions from the River Foreperson and collaborate daily with crew and wheelhouse personnel.
Develop your skills as a tow boat pilot in training; assist with deck line handling, navigation, and safe passage through locks.
Communicate clearly with all team members-by radio, signals, or verbally-to coordinate tasks and solve problems fast.
Maintain the boat and barge, reporting issues promptly and keeping equipment in top shape.
Monitor and report daily production rates and any challenges to leadership.
Display professionalism and courtesy when interacting with crew, supervisors, and the public.
Show reliable attendance and flexibility to meet the demands of the job.
Contribute to a culture of teamwork, stepping up to assist with additional duties as needed.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Previous marine deck hand or water-based mining experience preferred.
Must be 18 years of age or older and able to pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.
Valid driver's license that meets state requirements.
Strict adherence to safety protocols is essential.
Willingness to travel and work away from home, including nights and weekends when needed.
Comfortable working in a team and supporting co-workers and supervisors in all aspects of the job.
Ability to perform general labor, use hand and power tools, and always maintain PPE compliance.
Physical Requirements
Ability to climb stairs and ladders while carrying tools or equipment.
Capable of lifting and carrying up to 115 lbs. unassisted.
Regular bending, kneeling, stooping, and twisting when using tools or handling equipment.
Push/pull objects weighing 80-200 lbs. as needed.
Reach and maneuver in tight or elevated spaces.
Work Environment
Exposure to variable noise, weather, dust, fumes, and gases.
Work near moving mechanical parts and in fluctuating temperatures.
Wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, vest, flotation device, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and hearing protection.
