L), this role ensures that Japan development plans reflect agreed strategic direction and are executed effectively across functions.
As a core member of the Japan Compound Development Team (Japan CDT), the Project Manager enables structured planning, risk management, governance support, and transparent communication to ensure delivery of Japan development objectives in alignment with global program strategy and Japan R&D priorities.
The PM will report to PM Group lead and will actively contribute to build project management capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Integrated Project Planning & Execution Tracking
Develop, maintain, and continuously update the integrated Japan development plan in alignment with the strategy defined by the J-CDTL and global program leadership.
Ensure cross-functional deliverables, milestones, timelines, and dependencies are clearly reflected and coordinated.
Facilitate alignment across Japan and global functions to ensure consistent operational execution.
Track key milestones and ensure follow-through on agreed action items.
Prepare high-quality governance materials in collaboration with the J-CDTL and functional representatives.
Risk & Issue Management
Facilitate structured identification, assessment, and documentation of project risks and issues.
Coordinate cross-functional mitigation planning and contingency preparation.
Support scenario planning by providing structured impact assessments (timeline, resource, operational implications).
Cross-Functional Coordination & Matrix Enablement
Facilitate effective collaboration across Japan and global team members in a matrix environment.
Enable structured meeting management, including agenda planning, documentation, and follow-up tracking.
Promote clarity of roles, responsibilities, and interdependencies within the team.
The Project Manager influences without formal authority and focuses on enabling execution rather than directing strategy.
Functional & Organizational Contribution
In addition to compound-specific responsibilities, the Project Manager contributes to strengthening project management and operational excellence within Japan R&D.
Responsibilities may include:
Supporting or leading selected cross-functional improvement initiatives to enhance planning discipline, execution efficiency, and ways of working.
Contributing to and, where appropriate, leading resource and capacity planning activities across Japan development programs in collaboration with functional management.
Developing and refining project management tools, templates, and frameworks to improve consistency and transparency.
The scope and level of involvement in these activities will be aligned with business needs and organizational priorities.
Experience:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in the life sciences industry is required; advanced degree is preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry
At least 2 years in cross-functional matrix program management in early and late-stage drug development
Business-level English proficiency for communication with global teams.
Preferred:
Oncology drug development
Experience in global matrix organizations.
Skills and Competenc****ies
Strong integrated planning and organizational capability.
Structured problem-solving and analytical skills.
Solid business acumen and understanding of financial concepts
Ability to influence without formal authority.
Clear and concise communication skills (written and verbal).
Proficiency in Microsoft Project and/or enterprise planning tools (e.g., Planisware).

Experience or interest in portfolio management is preferred.
