Leading discovery activities in the competitive field of ADCs and radio therapeutics, the Head of ADC Discovery will aggressively build and sustain J&J's state of the art platform, delivering clinical candidates each year. This group will be part of the Therapeutics Discovery organization within J&J IM Research and Development and the leader will be part of the extended Therapeutics Discovery leadership team, helping to formulate the strategic direction and priorities for discovery within J&J.
The Head will be responsible for building and maintaining capabilities (which may be led by direct or matrixed reports), including utilizing innovative protein engineering and bioconjugation solutions and driving technical and intellectual leadership across relevant programs to enable delivery of ADC and radio therapeutics. This leader will be responsible for overseeing ADC and radio therapeutic project teams and partnering closely with groups in the Therapeutic Areas and Discovery Product Development and Supply (DPDS) to drive end to end sustainability and commercial viability of both current and future ADC programs within J&J.
The successful candidate will be accountable for:
Implementing a forward looking, ambitious, highly competitive vision and strategy for the ADC modality, in line with the strategy of Therapeutics Discovery and the overall J&J Innovative Medicine Research and Development strategy. This includes: (i) utilizing our ADC capabilities to deliver world class therapeutics; (ii) development of our radiotherapeutic platform as a therapeutic modality; (iii) formulating a forward-looking direction for ADC and radio therapeutics and championing the development of new conjugation technologies integrated with next generation biologics discovery platforms; (iv) potentially supporting multiple external strategic collaborations.
Providing strategic, resourcing, technical, and people and/or scientific leadership for ADC and radio therapeutic discovery capabilities in Therapeutics Discovery.
Driving the discovery strategy and execution for both our ADC and radiotherapy platforms, with global impact across oncology, other therapeutic areas, and functions
Influencing the execution of existing programs, shaping the future of the J&J ADC pipeline, and acting as a senior internal and external expert and industry thought leader
Integrating with TD, DPDS and the Therapeutic Areas to build a world class Drug Discovery organization
The successful candidate will also demonstrate exemplary leadership skills together with managerial and matrix leadership expertise to engage, motivate, and build strong, productive teams within the ADC groups.
He/She will be a role model for our leadership imperatives and will translate these into specific actions/initiatives with both the Therapeutics Discovery team and our external partners.
He/She will actively recruit, mentor, and develop outstanding drug discovery scientists and create a culture of engagement, scientific rigor, program impact, and innovation.
Additionally, he/she will place an emphasis on building a diverse team and supporting diversity in all its many different aspects within our organization.
Qualifications
A PhD in a chemistry or biology or related discipline and a minimum of 12-14 years of experience post PhD, with a strong track record of individual and team-level contributions to discovery programs or approved drugs, is required
Expert knowledge and experience in ADC discovery and development (preferably also radiotherapeutics), is required
Deep scientific track record should be documented through inventorship and a strong publication record in peer reviewed journals is required
The ability to present externally should be documented through a history of giving presentations at major scientific meetings; significant experience presenting to senior leaders within previous roles is required
Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring scientific team(s), with both direct and indirect people management experience, and an ability to grow and develop talent at multiple levels, is required
Significant leadership experience in complex organizations and will have shown the ability to navigate and lead within a highly matrixed environment is required
Previous experience with prioritizing competing portfolio demands, managing budgets and internal/ external resources, and operational leadership across multiple sites/teams is also required.
A record of success in partnering effectively with multiple, diverse types of research organizations, including academic institutions, contract research organizations, and public-private consortia should also be demonstrated is required
This role can be based in Spring House, PA or Cambridge, MA and may require up to 10% travel.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is 193,000 to 333,500.
The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year.
