Highly skilled researchers at NETL's three research sites - Albany , Oregon; Morgantown , West Virginia, and Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania - conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE's mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

    Location: Candidates must be local to the Morgantown WV or Pittsburgh PA areas as this position will be approximately 50% onsite at the NETL campus. Remote work is possible up to 50%.

    The Manager of Strategic Research Support leads Leidos' support of NETL's strategic research, development, and demonstration initiatives, including initiating, developing and executing Research, Development and Demonstration programs and supporting initiatives that strategically build enduring partnerships with universities, private industry, and other laboratories with the goal of developing new markets for RD&D programs key to the mission of NETL. Delivering timely, flexible, and reliable services to enable effective, efficient conduct of research and enhance the impact of knowledge and technology products, services, and documentation, this position reports to the Leidos RSS Program Manager. The Manager of Strategic Research Support will focus on NETL's research, development, and demonstration programs addressing initiatives such as point-source carbon capture, carbon dioxide removal, reduction of methane emissions, separation and recovery of critical minerals including rare earth elements, and the use of advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning across all research areas. The support of these initiatives involves fostering partnerships through business development in industry and government.

    As a core member of the Leidos RSS Management Team, the Manager of Strategic Research Support will collaborate with RSS Managers and personally lead interactions with NETL leaders of the Research Directorates (Geologic & Environmental Systems, Material Engineering & Manufacturing, Energy Conversion Engineering, and Computational Science & Engineering) to gain access to site support contractor research capabilities for new research initiatives and developing research competencies.

    Key to this role is providing reliable support services to enable effective and efficient conduct of research; providing expertise to identify new energy challenges aligning with NETL's expertise; leveraging industry and national laboratory relationships to develop and advance opportunities and partnerships enhancing NETL's reputation; and expanding the research portfolio. Key to this will be tracking and reporting on success criteria such as Sponsor Impact, Knowledge Generation, Technology Innovation, National Recognition, and R&D Growth.

    The successful candidate will identify opportunities for cross NETL Directorate research opportunities, conducting capability and strategy planning, including staffing needs to meet these opportunities. The Manager will lead, mentor, and coach scientists and engineers, business analysts, and business development professionals to support NETL's initiatives. The Manager will lead a team of approximately 15 staff supporting the more than 250 research support staff on RSS.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in a scientific or engineering discipline

    • 5 or more years of Commercialization, Marketing and/or Business Development experience

    • 10 or more years related experience with R&D planning, execution, and management in a commercial, university, or national laboratory setting. Experience on government Site Support Service Contracts is a plus

    • Strong skills in personnel and financial management, organization, communication, and conflict resolution with the ability to coordinate activities at multiple sites and resolve complex issues across multiple sites

    • Experience in organizational coaching and transformational leadership with a growth mindset

    • Experience managing customer expectations in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

    • Experience building partnerships with universities, industry and other laboratories

    • The ability to build and lead a multidisciplinary team of experts engaged in complex projects to conceptualize, develop and commercialize new products, processes and services

    • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus

    Pay Range:
    Pay Range $122,200.00 - $220,900.00
