What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a dedicated R&D Technologist with experience in mechanical, optics and electronics. The technologist performs a variety of duties associated with the development, building, modifying, repairing, maintaining, aligning, evaluating, operating, of optical and electro-optical systems or components to support a wide variety of optical systems for customers and experiments supporting the centers missions. Works in a laboratory or field setting, operating, and maintaining optical systems, monitoring experiments, and making and recording observations to support the development, testing of scientific theories and high precision optical alignments on high consequence optical systems for our customers. Supports documentation efforts, including preparing information for scientific and engineering reports and publications. Provides key support in the development of novel optical diagnostics and optical components and their implementation.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Perform mechanical and/or opto-mechanical assembly.
Build and maintain electronics and electromechanical equipment.
Support nighttime missions or one that straddles a weekend.
Maintain a strong safety theme and work within the defined safety envelope.
Work with a minimum of supervision.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$74,700 - $144,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
Associate degree in engineering or science or a high school diploma plus four (4) years' relevant experience
Experience in the following:
Maintaining technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and operating procedures.
Optical systems (how an image is formed, stops and pupils, F/#, wavelength, etc.).
Optical detectors and lasers.
Qualifications We Desire:
Electronic and electromechanical experience, including work with electronic circuits, and the maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation and complex cables.
Basic qualifications with laboratory-level machine shop tools (e.g., mill, drill, lathe).
Drawing experience for documentation such as Microsoft Visio, AutoCAD, Solid Works.
A strong dedication to positive teaming dynamics while attaining shared objectives, strong written and verbal skills, and detail oriented with a keen focus on customer service.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize and balance competing activities and manage ambiguity.
Ability to be proactive and follow through on assignments.
About Our Team:
The optics and sensors engineering department conceives, designs, and builds new integrated sensor systems to solve national problems with remotely sensed data. To execute the sensor development lifecycle, the department utilizes core competencies in optics and sensor sciences, sensor system engineering, advanced modeling and simulation, and data exploitation.
