Candidates will work on and be encouraged to contribute significantly on projects that explore novel infrared materials and sensors, plasmonics, and/or wide bandgap materials and microelectronic devices including, at the forefront in the following areas:

    • Design of experiments to understand and mitigate the interaction of ionizing radiation with optoelectronic materials and devices.

    • Design and electrical measurement, including at cryogenic temperatures, of novel optoelectronic/microelectronic devices that exploit Sandia's III-V semiconductor manufacturing and integration capability.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Assist in characterization of novel devices, including material and electrical measurements, to support fundamental science projects investigating optoelectronic/microelectronic device demonstrations using semiconductor foundry technologies.

    • Assist in design and fabrication of novel optoelectronic/microelectronic devices

    • Meet and coordinate with the teams fabricating, characterizing, and measuring the devices, epitaxial growers producing the device materials, as well as the theorists who model the device behavior.

    • Significantly coordinate with the expertise of the team to meet deliverables, which will supplement the candidate's area of research to contribute to the team and their success.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

    Qualifications We Require:

    • PhD in electrical engineering, materials science, physics or other relevant field conferred within five (5) years prior to employment

    • Experience performing original laboratory experimental research, as proven by a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals

    • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L security clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Electrical characterization of optoelectronic/microelectronic devices or thin-films

    • Cryogenic electrical characterization, including deep level transient spectroscopy

    • Optical materials characterization such as FTIR, Raman, PL, etc.

    • Design and fabrication of optoelectronic/microelectronic devices such as plasmonics, infrared sensors, power electronics, etc.

    • Excellent teaming and communication skills

    About Our Team:

The Multiscale Fabrication Science & Technology Development Department leverages a diverse capability set to provide science and technology products to enhance Sandia's national security missions. The department includes a broad set of expertise including atomic physics, quantum information S&T, micro-optics, and electrochemistry. We provide solutions including atomic physics based sensors; microfabrication at the atomic scale, atomic level experimental setups, atom and ion trapping microelectronic devices, and electrochemical materials expertise. In addition to work for internal Sandia organizations, we have an established record of successful engagement, collaboration, and delivery to both internal and external customers. The department leverages strong relationships with the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) facility, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), and other internal and external organizations to develop advanced solid-state electronic device technology.

    Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

    Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
