What Your Job Will Be Like:

An opening exists to lead fab operations for a variety of wide- and ultra-wide-bandgap semiconductor device projects in Sandia's Semiconductor Material and Device Sciences department. The primary interest is in vertical gallium nitride (GaN) power devices, although devices based on related materials and complementary architectures are also of interest. Leading the fab efforts involves design of travelers, process development, independent research on best design and fabrication practices, and data analysis. The successful applicant will lead a team of technologists who will run processes and characterization experiments specified by him/her. The position requires a significant level of ownership beyond the technologist role, and as such the successful applicant is expected to interface closely with technical staff including those with expertise in device design, processing, and physics, as well as semiconductor epitaxial growth. Additionally, the successful applicant is expected to communicate key results to management.

    • Supervise the fabrication and characterization of wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices, especially those based on GaN and related materials

    • Analyze the data obtained from such testing, and aid staff in ascertaining the physics behind the observed behavior; document test results for future use and process improvement

    • Work with device design and fabrication staff to suggest design and/or process modifications to improve device performance, manufacturability, and reliability

    • Develop project plans and carry out project management, and prepare associated test, maintenance, operations, and administrative procedures

    • Ensure that fabrication, testing, and other aspects of project work are conducted safely and securely

    • Prepare technical reports highlighting key results, and present them to staff, management, and customers

Due to the nature of the work, selected candidate must be able to work on site.

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, applied physics, materials science, or related field, plus five or more years of technical experience post degree, Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and technical experience

    • Semiconductor device experience, including vertical gallium nitride (GaN) power devices

    • Experience in the collection and analysis of device-level characterization data, including laboratory test equipment typically used for such evaluation

    • Experience in semiconductor device design and fabrication, including device layout, design of process flows, and cleanroom processing

    • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Knowledge of project and process engineering practices, and experience with project planning and management, including knowledge of Sandia's procedures and standards

    • Ability to work in a team environment including the ability to supervise a team of technologists, and to closely coordinate and communicate with technical staff, management, and customers

    • Knowledge of the physics of power electronic devices, including principles of operation, design tradeoffs, and application requirements

    • Familiarity with the preparation of publications including journal papers and conference presentations

    About Our Team:

The Semiconductor Material and Device Sciences Department (1873) is engaged in semiconductor physics and device research, with parallel and complementary efforts in fundamental science and novel device technologies. The department sits within the Center for Material, Physical, and Chemical Sciences. One of several current focus areas is III-Nitride materials and devices for power electronics and related applications. Other ongoing efforts include nano-photonics, radiation effects and defect spectroscopy in semiconductors, and visible and UV optoelectronics. The department's research utilizes staff expertise in experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics, state-of-the-art micro- and nano-fabrication, and advanced materials and device characterization and modeling. It partners closely with other organizations, including the Advanced Materials Sciences Department 1876, other departments in Centers 1300, 5200, 8800, and university and industry collaborators throughout the world. The department makes use of state-of-the-art growth and fabrication facilities associated with MESA (Sandia's Microsystems Engineering, Science, and Applications complex); scientific facilities at CINT (the joint Sandia / Los Alamos Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies); and staff laboratories with specialized characterization equipment.

Our team is committed to nurturing environment compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce. In support of this vision, we actively recruit applicants from diverse groups of backgrounds and fosters an inclusive community. Join us and work towards your goals while making a difference!

    Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
